NET Scheme in Secondary Schools of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region

Recruitment of Native-speaking English Teachersfor Secondary Schools (NET)

Salary Range: HK$16,165 to 43,940 per month

To maintain the force of NETs in secondary schools, a substantial number of NETs are required for the school year 2007-2008. On behalf of the secondary schools, suitable candidates are invited to apply for the Native-speaking English Teacher (NET) positions.

ROLE

NETs are required to teach English as a second language to Chinese students and assist in teacher and curriculum development in Government-subvented secondary schools (for students aged between 12 and 17) and schools for students with special educational needs.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT

The applicant should be a native-speaker of English (meaning English being the person’s native language) or possess native-speaker English competence.

Preference will be given to applicants with experience in teaching English as a second/foreign language.

For appointment in special schools, preference will be given to applicants who have special education training and/or experience in teaching students with special education needs.

Appointment of native-speaking English teachers (NETs) should be considered according to the following order of priority:

Category 1 (to be appointed at Graduate Master/Mistress (GM) rank, MPS pt. 12-33)

(i)a bachelor’s degree in English Language or English Literature or English Studies or Linguistics# or a Modern Language# OR a Bachelor in Education degree (major in English or a Modern Language#, but not primary education specialist) obtained after 3 years’ full-time study from a Hong Kong university or equivalent; and

(ii)a Post-graduate Diploma in Education majoring in English or equivalent; and

(iii)a Teaching of English as Foreign Language or a Second Language (TEFL/TESL) qualification at least at the diploma level; and

(iv)at least 1 year’s post-graduate experience of teaching English (preferably as a second or foreign language) at secondary level or above.

Category 2 (to be appointed at GM rank, MPS pt. 12-33)

(i)a bachelor’s degree in English Language or English Literature or English Studies or Linguistics# or a Modern Language#; OR a Bachelor in Education degree (major in English or a Modern Language#, but not primary education specialist) obtained after 3 years’ full-time study from a Hong Kong university or equivalent; and

(ii)a Post-graduate Diploma in Education majoring in English or equivalent; and

(iii)at least 1 year’s post-graduate experience of teaching English (preferably as a second or foreign language) at secondary level or above.

In the event that candidates meeting the requirements in Category 1 – 2 cannot be recruited, consideration may be given to appoint teachers with the following qualifications:

Category 3 (to be appointed at GM rank, MPS pt. 12-33)

(i)a bachelor’s degree in English Language or English Literature or English Studies or Linguistics# or a Modern Language# from a Hong Kong university or equivalent; and

(ii)a Post-graduate Diploma in Education or equivalent; and

(iii)at least 1 year’s post-graduate experience of teaching English (preferably as a second or foreign language) at secondary level or above.

Category 4 (to be appointed at GM rank, MPS pt. 12-33)

(i)a bachelor’s degree in any subject from a Hong Kong university or equivalent; and

(ii)a Post-graduate Diploma in Education majoring in English or equivalent; and

(iii)at least 1 year’s post-graduate experience of teaching English (preferably as a second or foreign language) at secondary level or above.

Category 5 (to be appointed at GM rank, MPS pt. 12-33)

(i)a bachelor’s degree in any subject from a Hong Kong university or equivalent; and

(ii)a Post-graduate Diploma in Education or equivalent; and

(iii)a TEFL/TESL qualification preferably at diploma level; and

(iv)at least 1 year’s post-graduate experience of teaching English (preferably as a second or foreign language) at secondary level or above.

Category 6 (to be appointed at GM rank, MPS pt. 12-33, with salary bar at pt. 17)

(i)a bachelor’s degree in English Language or English Literature or English Studies or Linguistics# or a Modern Language# from a Hong Kong university or equivalent; and

(ii)a TEFL/TESL qualification at least at the diploma level; and

(iii)at least 1 year’s post-graduate experience of teaching English (preferably as a second or foreign language) at secondary level or above.

Category 7 (to be appointed at GM rank, MPS pt. 12-33, with salary bar at pt. 17)

(i)a bachelor’s degree in any subject from a Hong Kong university or equivalent; and

(ii)a master’s degree in TEFL/TESL; and

(iii)at least 1 year’s post-graduate experience of teaching English (preferably as a second or foreign language) at secondary level or above.

Note:

# A degree in Linguistics or Modern Languages should be one in which English is the major language studies.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT & SALARY

The appointment will be on a two-year contract from 16 August 2007 to 15 August 2009, subject to renewal after expiry.

The salary scale is from around HK$16,165 to HK$43,940 (*approx. US$2,077 to 5,646) per month (12 months a year). Candidates with a PGDE or equivalent (not TEFL/TESL) qualifications) will enter at HK$18,010 (approx. *US$2,314) per month. Those without a local PGDE or equivalent will not be permitted to proceed beyond HK$20,865 (approx. *US$2,681) per month.

15% gratuity will be granted if your performance and conduct during the period of service have been satisfactory.

A new cash retention incentive, 5% OR 10% of basic salary will be provided to eligible NETs for the satisfactory completion of the third and fourth year OR the fifth year of continuous service onwards in Hong Kong respectively. The incentive is not payable for the first two years' of continuous service.

Passage, baggage and medical allowances and a special allowance of HK$12,950 (*approx. US$1,664) per month are provided for appointees whose normal place of residence is outside Hong Kong. (A NET will not be eligible for the special allowance if his/her spouse is currently receiving the same allowance or any housing benefit from his/her own employer.)

The salary and the conditions of service to be offered are subject to the candidate's qualifications and post-qualification teaching experience and the prevailing conditions at the time the offer of appointment is made.
