“A Mandela In Every Generation”

This year the Fund is holdingA Mandela In Every Generation Writing Campaign for school students around the country – in celebration of Madiba’scentenary. Students are invited to submit pieces of writing, art, plays or fundraising inspired by Nelson Mandela’s legacy and values with the subject being: -

A Mandela in Every Generation: What can I do to make SA better for ALL children…

Who can take part?

The campaign is open to ALL schools, any young people’s community organisations and direct individual submissions. We invite and challenge ALL schools to participate by encouraging the kids to submit their work.Each school will then pick their TOP5essays, art, or plays and send them to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund (NMCF), by email, post or fax.

Direct individual submissions are also welcome (where your school is not participating).

Please Note: the schools and/or children that wish to donate or fundraise for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund are welcome to do so, and EFT the raised funds to NMCF (details below).

The three age groups are:

Junior – up to 10 years old (the little ones can do art drawings e.t.c)

Intermediate – 11-13 years old(writing, art, plays or fundraising)

Senior – 14-19 years old(writing, art, plays or fundraising)

Campaign Guidelines

ChooseONEor More of the following:

1)Write anessay about your role/responsibility in keeping Madiba dream of making SA better for all children.

2)Art work of what a better SA looks like for all children. (Juniors – up to 10 years old)

3)A play/production inspired by Nelson Mandela’s legacy and values with the subject being: -

A Mandela in Every Generation: What can I do to make SA better for ALL children…

4)Fundraise for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund – philanthropy (desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes) - (see fundraising ideas attached)

Style

  • Think carefully about the language – choosing the words which best convey your intended meaning and message.
  • You are encouraged to use everyday language and colloquialisms but if appropriate please include explanations in brackets.
  • Think carefully about the characters in your writing and what they say about the world you live in.
  • LANGUAGE – children are welcome and encouraged to write a language of their choice.
  • Word CountThe maximum word count is 500 words

Deadlines

All entries must be submitted by 6 July 2018

Other Rules

1)All writing submissions must be original and entirely that of the student (however, rewritings of existing stories are acceptable if sufficiently original in presentation and content).

2)The NMCF reserve the right publish and communicate submissions.

3)The Trust and judges reserve the right not to award a prize in any particular categories if there are not sufficient submissions or they feel that the submissions are not of sufficient merit.

Rules for individual submissionsare the same as school submissions rules and guidelines. However, while we cannot offer school prizes to individuals, individualsubmissions have the opportunity of winning the same prizes as students entering from schools.
