JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: EARLY YEARS PRACTITIONER

BASED: LUTON DSP SETTING

RESPONSIBLE TO: PRESCHOOL PRACTICE MANAGER ORNURSERY MANAGER

RESPONSIBLE FOR: NONE

JOB PURPOSE: To provide inclusive play and learning opportunities for all children attending the pre-school or nursery and to maintain a safe, stimulating and enjoyable environment.

MAIN DUTIES:

1.To meet children’s social, emotional, physical and intellectual needs by providing stimulating and age-appropriate play and learning opportunities in the setting, as directed by senior staff.

2.To supervise and safeguard the children as appropriate by protecting them from dangerous or harmful situations. To share any child protection concerns with the setting Manager / Deputy and / or to take responsibility for safeguarding procedures in line with LCSB and PSLA policies and procedures.

3.To provide a high level of care that will enhance the children’s general health and wellbeing and to ensure that all toys and equipment are clean and safe at all times.

4.Carry out observations in order to establish that the children’s general health and wellbeing is being enhanced. To keep informative, accurate and up-to-date records, including any behavioural or developmental reports.

5.To assist the Manager / Deputy in providing a variety of outdoor activities to cover all areas of the children’s development as well as supervising outdoor play in all weathers.

6.To assist in the preparation of snacks and where appropriate, to set up and clear away meal times and supervision of children during meal times.

7.To liaise with parents/carers about their children’s needs & to inform parents/carers how their child’s session progressed, always starting the discussion with a positive comment.

8.To be aware of any special needs a child may have and informing other staff as appropriate.

9.To arrange and attend parents’/carers’ meetings to allow two-way discussion on child’s progress on a regular basis.

10.To act as a key person to a group of children. Share the progress of key children with staff and contribute to the planning of activities and delivery of curriculum for individual children.

11.To contribute to and attend his/her supervisions and staff appraisal.

12.To attend and contribute at regular staff/team meetings and to liaise with other staff

13.Where appropriate to cover ratios in other rooms or at the other Luton DSP settings.

14.To be prepared to work with any age group within the setting for any length of time at the manager’s request.

15.To attend any conferences, training events or meetings as identified by the setting Manager / Deputy.

16.To ensure adherence to the settings code of practice on confidentiality and the charity’s policies and procedures.

17.To keep up to date with current good practice.

18.To perform any other duties as deemed necessary by the setting Manager / Deputy.

PERSON SPECIFICATION:

Essential Criteria

1.A minimum level 2 or 3 relevant childcare qualification.

2.To have attended / be prepared to attend minimum LSCB and other safeguarding training as defined within the Nursery training programme. To be aware of safeguarding and child protection legislation and local safeguarding children’s requirements.

3.Current working experience of the childcare and early education sector.

4.A sound understanding of child development and children’s needs.

5.The ability to carry out observations to a high standard and in accordance with the Early Years Foundation Stage.

6.Good oral and written communication skills with sufficient understanding and use of English to ensure the well-being of children (an ability to keep records and liaise with parents & other agencies)

7.Commitment to equal opportunities.

Desirable Criteria

1.A Commitment to further Higher early year’s education and childcare qualifications

2.Experience or knowledge of the voluntary sector

3.Experience of SENCO.

As the Pre-School Learning Alliance meets the requirements in respect of exempted questions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, employment to this post will be subjected to DBS clearance before the appointment is confirmed.
