MAPPING RULES
The following checklist identifies the rules for mapping. Each map will use only those rules that apply. Make sure you refer to this checklist when creating maps in this course.
Neatness and accuracy count! Use a ruler at all times.
Always use a pencil when mapping and graphing. Sometimes, if the work has been checked by the teacher, it can be re-copied in black ink. No blue pen.
Draw a 1 cm border around the map. Measure in 1 cm from the edge of the page
Include an appropriate title that identifies what the map is showing. You do not need to underline the title.
Draw a north arrow. This should be placed near the top of the page.
PRINT labels horizontally. Important labels can be printed in CAPITAL letters to show that they are more important.
If your map is crowded, you can draw a straight line from a specific location outward and then write the label. You should try and label to the right of the location. If this is not possible, try the following:
Toronto (2nd choice)
Ι
Toronto (3rd choice) ______Toronto (1st choice)
Ι
Toronto (4th choice)
Use symbols to show significant features on the map. Include these symbols in your legend.
If necessary, use a legend to identify symbols and colours on the map. Draw a box and label it Legend.
Include a source box to show where you got the information to create the map. Draw a box and label it Source.
Include your name and the date the map was created in the bottom right corner.
Go over this checklist and have someone peer review your map to ensure that you have met the map criteria and followed the rules.
