2. Project Title: Bodega Bay Coastal Stream Restoration
3. Project Purpose – Problem: (problem being addressed) The California Unified Watershed Assessment has identified the
Bodega Bay Watershed as a Category 1 priority watershed. The Estero Americano is included on the Clean Water Act
Section 303 (d) list due to high sedimentation and nutrient loading. The North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board
Watershed Management Initiative states high ammonia and low dissolved oxygen are the major nutrient issues in the Estero
Americano. This Project will address these problems.
4. Project Goals: The goal of this project is to assist landowners in the Bodega Bay
Hydrologic Unit to implement projects that will improve the water quality and natural resources of Estero Americano and
Bodega Bay by reducing sediment, nutrient, and pathogen loading
a. Short-term Goals: Outreach and Education to landowners on best management practices. Implementation of projects that
on agricultural land.
b. Long-term Goals: Fully implemented projects that will address the nutrient and sediment loading in the watersheds in
the Bodega Bay Hydrologic Unit. Once these goals are attained, it is hoped the Estero will become “de-listed.” The long- term
goal of the RCDs effort in this area is to maintain the agricultural viability of the region while enhancing the natural
resources and habitat.
