Introduction to Machine Embroidery – Angie Burt

Get to know your machine and the potential within it in this 5-day course. You will explore the simple possibilities of straight and zigzag stitch, playing with colour, thread and materials. Once the simple options have been explored and your confidence is developed, you will go on to drop the dog feed and be introduced to the joys of free machine embroidery. As skill develops you will use it in a range of exercises to develop your designs and explore a wide range of materials. Your samples will build into a reference library you will draw on in your future work

Design for Craft – Kate Horner

Every year makers with strong craft-skills who have limited design knowledge, wanting to know more, approach me. They recognise that developing design skills helps increase your voice in your personal work. In this 5-day workshop you will explore each of the five key design elements.

Day 1 – Colour. Create a colour-mixing library. This is based on colour theory and can be applied in craft media.

Day 2 – Shape. Looking at composition with consideration of the subject, background and frame. You will apply colour through accurate colour mixing. You will go on to explore collage using painted papers.

Day 3 – Line. This is an introduction to drawing in a variety of media, tonal and colour.

Day 4 – Texture. Looking at surfaces within the background, mid-ground and foreground of an image.

Day 5 – Form. Moving into 3-D.
