..Native American Diorama Project

Due No Later Than: Thursday, November 5, 2015

In class we have been studying about early Native American tribes. The tribes are:

The KarankawaThe JumanoThe Comanche

The CaddoTheApaches

Attached is a graphic organizer to help your child organize his/her information. You may use these notes and our Social Studies book to help complete the project.

Directions:

1. Your child will need a shoebox (or something similar). It should be a medium-sized or large-sized shoebox. Your child’s shoebox needs to be painted or covered in ONE SOLID COLOR. In the past, students have spray painted their shoeboxes.

2. Your child will then decide which Native American tribe he/she would like to depict in his/her diorama. The choices are:

The KarankawaThe JumanoThe Comanche

The Caddo The Apaches

The main difference between these tribes that I should see in your child’s diorama will be what their homes were made of. For example Jumano projects should have a house made of mud/clay; Karankawa should have teepees; and Caddo projects should have a home made of grass (beehive-shaped). (A small plastic or Styrofoam cup makes a great base for the house.)

3. Other components will also need to be included in the box. These components must be proportional (just the right size) to the box. These include:

* at least 2 animals are present:

(these can be cut from a magazine, drawn, made, bought, printed from computer, etc.)

* at least 2 types of food are present:

(these can be cut from a magazine, drawn, made, bought, printed from computer, etc.)

* their mode of transportation (ex: canoe) is present:

(this can be cut from a magazine, drawn, made, bought, printed from computer, etc.)

* three different extra components are present:

(examples include: fireplace, river, Native American, clothesline, sun, clouds, crop fields if the group farmed, etc.)

You will use an index card to attach to the shoe box. On the card you will need to write:

1. The name of the shelter

2. The tribe of Native Americans that used the shelter

3. The region they lived in

4. In your own words describe the shelter. You will then glue the card to the back of the shoe box.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I have included pictures of two examples. I have also included a rubric of how your child’s project will be graded.

Please note that these projects are to be child-made. Parents are welcome to help when it comes to using a glue gun, etc., but please be sure your child makes this project. Also, feel free to help your child with proofreading the write-up for correct spelling. Thank you for your support and help.

Have fun and happy learning!

Ms. Gonzalez
