New Course Set to Help Young People Manage Their Money

Nationwide & Edexcel help students develop personal finance skills

Leading building society Nationwide has teamed up with awarding body Edexcel (part of Pearson UK) to develop a course designed to prepare students for the challenge of managing their personal finances. The BTEC award in Money and Finance Skills, aimed at 14 – 19 year olds, will be available for secondary schools and colleges from September. The course will focus on providing students withrelevant and practicallife skills and encouraging young people to adopt good financial habits both now and in later life.

An emphasis on practical learning through activities will give students the opportunity to take part in enterprise activities and experience first hand how to manage debt, budget with fixed earnings and explore ethical investment. Course units include Money Matters for Career Planning, Saving and Spending, and Economic and Business Understanding.

Uniquely, the qualification uses free online resources provided by Nationwide Education to support teachers in delivering this essential part of a young person’s education, whilst providing students with a recognisable and useful qualification. Engaging and innovative, the interactive resources help teachers to keep the course lively and interesting and ensure it is relevant to the students’ lives.

“It’s important that young people learn how to manage their money and avoid getting into debt.Through widening access to financial education, Nationwide and Edexcel are uniquely placed to support teachers in preparing students. A combination of financial and education expertise ensures the course will provide students with the skills they need to prepare them for independent living.” Said Caroline Hallatt, Head of Corporate Responsibility, Nationwide

Ziggy Liaquat, Managing Director, Edexcel said “We’re very excited to be working with Nationwide on such an important project and one that is genuinely relevant to students’ lives. The current economic climate teaches us all that prevention is better than cure and this course is designed to provideyoung people with the skills they need to keep a grip on their finances. The real life activities will help to teachers to inspire their students and help us all work towards a more financially literate population.”
