Task 1

P1 Explain the benefits of diversity to societyFill in the research sheet on handout ED03. Submit this hand-written research and also submit a word-processed essay that explains the benefits of diversity to society. Your research sheet should help you with this. Your essay should explain how embracing diversity enhances society and what it can bring to the individuals who live there. You should mention aspects such as foods, religions and faiths, sports, alternative therapies, the arts (art, literature, dance etc), social cohesion, tolerance, employment and expertise.

Task 2

P2 Use recognised terminology to explain the importance of promoting equality, recognising diversity and respecting rights in health and social care settings.Fill in handout ED03 to explain what each of the words means. Give an example of how it can be used in health & social care to promote equality, recognise diversity and respect the rights of clients/staff in health and social care.

P3 Explain the potential effects of discriminatory practice on those who use health or social care servicesDescribe and explain Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Explain why discrimination could cause someone to go down the hierarchy of needs and give examples from case studies.Identify vulnerable groups in society and explain why they are prone to discrimination. Explain how discrimination could affect their physical and mental health and give an example. Using the Christopher Alder case study, explain what Institutional Discrimination is and how this affected his health.

Identify WHERE you think these beliefs came from. How do you think your beliefs may impact on clients in a health and social care environment in a negative way?What practical strategies could you employ to ensure you are acting in an anti-discriminatory way?

NB if you don’t feel you have any judgemental beliefs, then first question yourself about many different topics because most of us have some beliefs which may be discriminatory. Think about race, age, sex, sexuality, rich people, poor people, geographical areas, beliefs, religion etc etc etc.
