This award forms part of the CHKS annual Top Hospitals awards 2016.These awards recognise and celebrate the success of healthcare providers and are awarded to thoseorganisationswho have demonstrated their outstanding achievements in healthcare quality and improvement.

CHKS uses over 25 years of experience in the analysis of hospital data to decide the indicators on which each of the Top Hospitals awards are judged. Awards are made on the basis of an analysis of publicly available datasets and every NHS Acute Trust in England is included.

The CHKS Top Hospitals awards 2016 were held inLondon on 10May and were attended by over 200 guests including leaders from across the healthcare sector, from the Department of Health, Royal Colleges, and Acute providers.

The CHKS quality of care award is a national award for outstanding performance in providing a safe hospital environment for patients. The indicators for 2016 include:

  • Day case conversion to inpatient rate (vs national rates, case mix adj per BADS)
  • Patient reported outcomes score (across 4 procedures, per EQ5D)
  • Rate of emergency readmission to hospital (>16; 28 days)
  • Percentage of elective admissions where planned procedure not carried out (not patient decision)
  • Summary Hospital-level Mortality Index (SHMI)
  • Risk adjusted length of stay
  • Risk adjusted mortality index
  • Percentage of patients >65 with fractured neck of femur with pre-op LoS<=2
  • Cancer patients seen within 2 weeks - all suspected cancers
  • Discharge to usual place of residence within 56 days of emergency admission for patients with stroke
  • Discharge to usual place of residence within 28 days of emergency admission for patients with a hipfracture (FnoF; aged 65+)
  • Admitted patients’ waiting time from point of referral to treatment
