Description of the organization: The Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA offers the WyomingValley community a vast variety of wellness and family activities all in relationship to the YMCA’s core values:

Number of positions available: No more than 3 a semester (Interns are welcomed at any time of the year.)

Internship description: The Wilkes-Barre YMCA Intern is expected to maintain a high level of professionalism, provide guidance and supervision to our Health and Fitness Staff and recognize the importance of a strong commitment to the Wilkes-Barre YMCA and the internship program. Interns will gain experience in several elements of youth fitness, aerobic classes, personal training, special events, fitness evaluations and exercise prescription, orientations, member interaction, worksite wellness and grant writing.

Responsibilities of Intern:

  • To demonstrate knowledge of the job and responsibilities of Supervisors, Fitness Monitors, Aerobic Instructors and Desk Attendants.
  • To demonstrate understanding of all emergency procedures such as building evacuation, injury/illness, inappropriate/unsafe behavior by participants or staff
  • To enforce all policies of the Wilkes-Barre YMCA, and to directly communicate with the Wellness Director about problems or concerns dealing with the Wilkes-Barre YMCA programs, staff, or participants
  • To obtain and maintain all applicable certifications such as CPR and First Aid
  • To participate in all aspects of special programming including youth fitness and worksite wellness.
  • To promote and work on special events
  • To perform any addition duties as assigned by the Wellness Director of the Wilkes-Barre YMCA

Responsibilities of Host Site:

  • To confer with students to determine his/her responsibilities and to present an overview of the agency/business/site’s purpose, policies, program, rules and regulations.
  • To schedule periodic conferences with students to assess his/her progress
  • To develop working agreement with the student which clearly outlines his/her role and responsibilities at the worksite during the first week
  • To review and evaluate reports and discuss them with the student when necessary

Qualifications: CPR/AED Certified (Provided by the YMCA), majoring and having an interest in a sport/recreation or health field & qualify for an internship according to the intern’s major.

This internship is unpaid, but the intern will receive a free membership to the YMCA as long as they are interning at the YMCA. The intern may work as many hours as needed to accomplish the hours set fourth by their advisor.
