Terrorism Discussion Questions

1. Is terrorism still a useful analytical term or should it be abandoned? Think about the first day we spent on trying to come up with a definition. Back up your answer with evidence.

A: I think that terrorism shouldn’t be abandoned but the definition of the word “terrorism” should definitely be more defined.

2. Is there a ‘new terrorism’ in existence today? Does terrorism seem different now in 2016 than it did back in 2001? Justify your answers.

A: No, I don’t think there is a “new terrorism” because I feel people just use stereotypes and don’t record other attacks around the world that aren’t necessarily dealing with one race.

3. Can states or entire countries be labeled “terrorists”? Explain your answer.

A: No, because there are people who live in that country that don’t want to be lumped into that category or being terrorists.

4. Is terrorism a serious threat to international and national security? Explain your answer.

A: It’s serious to international security, because terrorism can happen everywhere and anywhere. People have hatred for many different countries around the world. We need to all stay together as a whole to fight against theses attacks.

5. Is WMD terrorism a likely prospect in the future? Do you see terrorists using nuclear bombs in the future?

A: Yes, because terrorists still do and try new ways to kill other people. They try to smuggle many different things and don’t make it as obvious.

6. Does al Qaeda continue to pose a serious international threat?

A: No, because there are other organizations like ISIS and other individuals in general that are terrorists.

7. Is terrorism the result of root causes such as poverty and exclusion?

A: I think that it is because we don’t necessarily reach out to other countries as much to help. Plus they can envy what another country has, and they don’t have it.

8. Is religious extremism a major cause of terrorism?

A: Yes, because some people believe that their religion is better and they need to get people to understand that so they make a huge event to get it to people they're serious.

9. Are counter-terrorism frameworks based on suppression and military force

effective in responding to terrorism? Basically, does using another nations military to occupy a foreign nation help suppress terrorist activity?

A: I don’t understand.

10. Is the use of coercive interrogation or torture permissible and effective as a

counter-terrorismmethod?

A: No, because people are going to rebel.

11. Is the targeted assassination of terrorist suspects an effective response to

terrorism?

A: No, because people are going to see that as murder and just want to detain them so it is not a cruel, unjust act.

12. Have global efforts to reduce terrorism and political violence been effective in the past decade?

A: No, because it seems there are more and more terrorists attacks.
