Daly’s Got Your Back(pack)!

As college students, one of the necessities we carry with us everyday is a backpack. We don’t think twice before we grab it and throw it on our back,or appreciate the way it simplifies our lives. In both 2007 and 2011, I had the opportunity to go to Kenya and serve in an orphanage through an organization called Orphan Concern International. The specific orphanage I served is called “The Kevin House” and was dedicated in honor of my dad who passed away several years ago, holding a very special place in my heart. Most of the childrenhave no parents, no shoes on their feet, and no idea when their next meal may be, yet their faces radiate a joy that is contagious. It is their joy that captured my heart, making me want to continue to serve them just as my dad would have. The primary school kids I taught are going on to secondary school (high school) and while their education is sponsored, they are still in need of necessities like a backpack and basic school supplies. During the week of Homecoming, I plan to do a backpack drive where Auburn students can donate their used backpacks, gym bags, or any type of bag to these children. Along with the backpacks, I will also collect a different school supply item each day throughout the week to fill the backpacks. We are so blessed as Auburn students with the opportunity to get an education and have the tools we need to succeed. With my platform, students can become a small part in breaking the cycle and inspiring Kenyan students to press on and complete their education. Our Auburn creed states “I believe in education, which gives me the knowledge to work wisely and trains my mind and my hands to work skillfully.” My platform is a simple way for Auburn to impact students in Solai, Kenya with the same philosophy: education matters.
