Shaking hands Kissing Sneering Crying______
A baby’s only form of communication is crying. A baby cries when it is hungry or uncomfortable. When we can speak, crying is not really necessary, but we do it because it is our most basic and natural form of communication. Millions of years ago, crying was an important part of our behaviour : if a baby can call its parents, it has a better chance of survival.
______
When baby starts eating food, it must be soft. Today this is done by cooking and liquidizing foods, but before the invention of fire, humans could not prepare baby food in this way. Instead adults used to chew the raw meat and vegetables to make them soft enough for their baby to eat. When it was ready, they passed the food from their mouth to the baby’s. feeding in this way was also a sign of affection and created a bond between mother and child. Therefore some scientists believe that this was probably the origin of kissing, and today we still kiss to show affection.
______
Shaking hands is popular in many countries, but what was the origin of this behaviour? One explanation is that in the past people carried weapons to hunt and to defend themselves against their enemies. So, when people met a stranger, they opened their hands to show that they were not carrying a weapon. It was then a friendly action to touch the other person by giving them their hand.
______
Sometimes when we are angry with someone of if we dislike something, it is very obvious from the expression of our faces. When we raise a lip and show our teeth, it is called sneering. Animals display similar behaviour. They also show their teeth, but in a more aggressive way than humans. For example, when a wolf does it, it looks as if it is about to bite, and bite hard. It shows its teeth to frighten other animals. Our ancestors may have had more aggressive expressions, but today we often try to hide our true feelings and consequently use less obvious body language.
