NAGAPATTINAM REPORT – PATTINACHERRI
District: Nagapattinam
Fouth site visit made: On 18th -20th March 2005
Participants: Raj Jeba Durai, Dhanalakshmi and Keshav Chand(Lucknow)
Volunteers visitedthe following villages in Nagapattinam:
1. Akkaraipettai
2. Keechankuppam
3. Kallar
4. Seruthur
5. Pattinacheri
General:
This village was badly affected. In that area, 480 people died in Tsunami. Among them 170 children died. Totally 500 houses got damaged. . Till now, fourty families have not got any support. One hundred children are destitute living in relief camps. Children still in the fear of 26th January about next tsunami may occur. No temporary shelter.
Asha Honor Volunteers Dhanalakshmi Keshav and Jeba Durai Visited pattinacheri and we have given the dress materials for the village youth and children. We have provided the dress to all the thirty families where there is no support is given and they need for dress materials. We have visited for more than three times after the Tsunami struck, and they happily invite us and they will share the happiness and the sadness and also we will talk to them to make them happy and take them the fear of Tsunami. And also they are very thankful for Ajai and Prasanna they told us to convey the thanks to prasanna Muralimani and the entire abroad volunteer who made this happen. This was the dress material purchased from ash Honor team as Follows.

And also we visited several villages to Know the status of the toys and book sets over all. We visited:

Were the books sets have been given we collected the feed back form and all the head masters are very happy about the toys and book sets and they are very happy about the books which have more pictures Anandan headmaster of Akkerapeetai school told us its very useful for the children to learn stories and to move the fear of Tsunami and they have a sepreate half an hour period for toys and books sets reading they can use the toys in the group playing also this was a feed back given I most of the villages we visited.
Van Given By asha to Suyam Trust:
We have seen the van which was given by Asha Yale chapter the van looks extremely well and also its very helpful for the children to go from there houses to schools while we are going to Akkarpettai in the morning 8.00am the students are in the queue in various stops to take the van and when we reach the akkerpettai we saw the van going to pick the children its really a useful one for the childrens in akkerpettai, and also they have a good volunteers who are the village youth anand, siva, gopal, Bhaskar and many more volunteers who helps I all ways I think the van is very useful and also the van was first inaugurated by the Collector of Nagapattinam Mr Radha Krishnan I.A.S. and I have seen the photograph in the local news paper he himself said this is a good idea.
Tailoring Unit in Akkarpettai supported by Asha:
We met the tailoring unit in that village its really a wonderful oppturinity to move with the village people they have ten tailoring machines. And they have started there work in all ways and they are very good at tailoring, they get orders from the local village people, this makes them more motivated, and also the unit is going on fine.
General observations about Nagapattinam.
The Nagapattinam is over all in stable condition all have been improved in all matters like fishing and all the work they do, and I can see the most affected village in Nagapattinam are Akkarapettai and Keechankuppam now the village have been improved very well, all the fisherman are going to sea to catch fish and also they are been coming to the normal position with in one to two month they will be like before and also they are saying now a days we get good money while fishing and we are happy. So the Nagapattinam village is improving and only thing is house have not build yet these are the construction level and government has to do this. And some people say we can like in a hut but if the government builds the house we will be happy.

Padmapriya:
These dress materials are helped in time manner it made me happy and satisfied, some Ngo were took the details about our problem but they ignore after taking survey, but Asha honor is not like that it satisfied our fulfill our needs.
Asha provided some toys and educational material it helps the children to be forget their worries. There are no words to praise, we got dress materials for the whole families in Pattinacherri, so I glad to say there is no organization to help in time manner.
I thank your organization for regular visit in a month and I feel grateful because like a family members these volunteers are cared for us.

I’m like to wish your organization, Tsunami affected peoples in Pattinacherri were happy to remembered us. Past 6 months they had a regular site visit to solve us.
3 months back asha provided the educational and toy materials that helps to forget the Tsunami fear from our children. And also we got dress materials in our family, I’m so much happy about your organization, I thank for every help which asha provided in needful manner.

Even though many days passed your organization remembered us and also provided educational materials and toys, these are very much helps to learn through these educational materials for the children and also we got dress materials for my whole family.

I like to say that we got some steel vessels; buckets and house materials were provided by some Ngo’s and also by other ngos but we got some new dress materials from asha which is every much helpful for college going students, we benefited through these dress materials, I’m thankful to asha.
Sumathi’s family:
Every month asha visits us and took survey about the people needs to solve the problem in Pattinacherri village. We got educational materials and a toys set for children to refresh their fear from Tsunami, now the people got back into their normal life, and children were mentally and physically feels better. And grateful for providing the dress materials and we are benefited and happy about support of Asha.
When we have no enough dresses, we have old dresses which is also torn and some Ngo’s were gave old dresses but it is not good enough, so in time manner asha provided the dresses materials to us, we are thankful to asha.

We are happy and satisfied with these dress materials and Asha supports a lot in time manner. The educational material helps the children to forget their fear.
I like to say “children were disappointed whenever any car passes through our streets because asha volunteers were suppose to come”.
Udhayavani, Udhayanila, Kalaivani:
Tsunami affected peoples in Pattinacherri were grateful to asha, because they provide the educational materials past three months back and also the toys sets.
As per our need of new clothes they provided new dresses materials for the whole families in Pattinacherri village.
Children were forgetting their fear of Tsunami because of the educational material which asha provided to us.
Bhakyalakshmi:
I wish to say that no other Ngo’s were had kind enough but asha was so supportive with us, every month they have site visit to know our problems.
We always want to say our problem to asha because they help in time manner.
We got educational materials and a toys set for children to refresh their fear from Tsunami, now the people got back into their normal life.

I like to say that” children were disappointed whenever any car passes through our streets because thinking that asha volunteers as come but unfortunately they disappointed because we love asha volunteers that much”.
Few Ngos gave dress materials for the single person in a family but asha provided the dress materials for the whole families.
These dress materials are seems to be brought by myself because so much excellent clothes.

Every month asha volunteer had visit in Pattinacherri; they were so supportive whenever they come. We got educational materials and toy sets to the children it is so needful through this toy sets children were enjoyed. These educational materials gave the reading skills through the interesting novels and story telling books, asha fulfill our needful things in time manner.
Some Ngos gave some old clothes to people but youngster were won’t get any new clothes, we wear old clothes by washing it. But we feel guilty when we remember our past days. But Asha made us to wear new and excellent dress materials that are suited for all school and college going youngsters.
We are grateful to Asha honor to provide these kinds of dress materials.

Asha Honor Volunteers Feed back:
I am very happy about the village pattinacheri. We reached there at 5.30Am in the morning, we had a warm welcome by the village women. We have start distributing the dress materials in the morning to all the thirty families and we have given the set of clothes to the family members, I feel good about the steps taken by Asha Team. And this is very important for the villagers.

As I feel from the visit to pattinacheri, I am very happy to get involved with the children, particularly the village youth people, all of them welcomed warmely when we are late for three months they had a same feeling with us, they treat us well, and they calmly taken there dress there was no shout and fighting amoung the villagers, because I have seen the fighting and screaming while giving dress in some villages but in that village I find a good response to us, and they are very happy about all the materials which we have given to them dress toys and book materials.

During my visit, I observed that the people needs are more than what we give through Asha support. Some of the needy people are still there without any support. I felt that Asha support is covered a portion but still there is an urgency of support. Further Asha support is very much essential to bring about change in their life.
Asha supported funds for nutrition, van and tailoring centre in Akkarapettai, I saw the changes brought about were great and it serving a lot of children. Book set and toy kits given in the school was very much helpful for the children. Nutrition supply is very much needed for the children in the schools. So Government should look into it. Volunteers have to try to coordinate with the Government regarding nutrition. Suyam volunteers are working very well. I am very happy on the work going on.
