Nach fünf im Urwald--Case Review

For the underlined nouns/pronouns in the following script excerpt, give the case of the noun/pronoun, AND the reason why it is in this case. To help you, here is a list of the four cases and the possible reasons you could give for each. Just use the codes to give your response!

Note: The case review activity on tomorrow's quiz will use a similar format. You may want to keep this sheet handy as a reference, together with a printout of the "Basic Chart" of the forms of der/das/die, the ein-words, pronouns etc.!

Nominative:

N1:The noun/pronoun is the subject of the verb

N2:The verb in this clause is "sein" (or "bleiben" or "werden") ==> all the nouns/pronouns in this clause are in the nominative [if no preposition is involved and there's no reason to use the Genitive]

Accusative:

A1:The noun/pronoun is the direct object of the verb

A2:The noun/pronoun is the object of an accusative preposition

A3:The noun/pronoun is the object of a two-way preposition, and the verb is describing MOTION towards or away from the noun

A4:Time expression without a preposition

A5:The noun/pronoun is the object of "es gibt"

Dative:

D1:The noun/pronoun is the indirect object of the verb (beneficiary or recipient of the action)

D2:The noun/pronoun is the object of a dative preposition

D3:The noun/pronoun is the object of a two-way preposition, andthe action is taking place (located) in, on, under, above (etc.) the noun, or an object is located in, on, under, above (etc.) the noun

D4:Time expression with a preposition

D5:The noun/pronoun is the object of a dative verb (or a dative adjective, but we won't ask about that)

Genitive:

G1:The noun/pronoun is being described as POSSESSING some other item/concept

G2:The noun/pronoun is the object of a genitive preposition

Wolfgang: In 5 Stunden kommt Häring.

Johanna: Hering?

Wolfgang: Nicht Hering. Hä—Herr Häring. Mit "ä". Der macht die Photos für die Kampagne.

Johanna: Au wei.

Karin: Der Kandidat und seine glückliche Familie am Sonntagmorgen im Garten. Jetzt müsst' eruns mal sehen [rhetorical: He should see us now…]

Oliver: Das eröffnet dir völlig neue Wählerschaften. [That (would) open up totally new demographics for you.]

Johanna: Angie?

Wolfgang: Erwin!

Johanna: Oh Gott!…Das hat sie ja noch nie gemacht!

Oliver: Normalerweise läuft die vor allem weg, was sich bewegt. [=Normally she runs away from everything that moves]

Wolfgang: Ausgerechnet Erwin! Der Neugart, der dreht doch durch! [Oh no, not Erwin! That Neugart [the neighbor], he's gonna go nuts!]

Karin: [Da] gehst du morgen hin und sagst esihm.

Wolfgang: Nee, ich geh' da nicht hin. Ich sag's ihm nicht.

Oliver: Dann sag ich ihm das.

Wolfgang: Nein, du auch nicht. Du kennst den Neugart nicht. Das ist ein ganz kleinkarierter, adidasgestreifter Choleriker. [He's a really petty, irascible jerk ("small-checkered, Adidas-striped choleric" )]

Karin: Ja, ja, aber irgendwas müssen wir doch jetzt machen. [We've gotta do sth.]

Wolfgang: Wisst ihr was? Wisst ihr, was wir machen? Wir gehen jetzt alle zusammen, jetzt sofort, in Nachbars Garten und tun den Erwin zurück in seinen Käfig [=put (tun) Erwin back in his cage], und der Neugart denkt morgen früh, der wäre dort verendet [that he (Erwin] died there (in the cage)].

Oliver: Jungs, das ist eine gute Idee!

Johanna: Ich weiß nicht.

Karin: Ja, guck doch mal, wie der aussieht, der sieht doch aus, als ob da ein Kampf stattgefunden hat [he (Erwin) looks as if a fight took place].

Oliver: [Sieht] doch gut aus

Wolfgang: Das könnt' er doch selber gemacht haben, im Todeskampf: Hasen machen so was. [He could have done that himself, in his death struggle. Rabbits do that kind of thing.]

Oliver: Ja

Wolfgang: …zum Vorschein kommt [is appearing now]… So…

Oliver: Nase zuhalten. [Hold your nose]

Wolfgang: Ich weiß es nicht.

Oliver: Hase auf dem Motorrad… [=rabbit on a motorcycle]

Wolfgang: Ha ha ha ha …

Oliver: Wolfgang: wir werden beobachtet [=we are being watched].

Wolfgang: Clara! Komm!

Clara: 25. Juli, 4 Uhr 37 früh. Papa und ein Mann, den ich nicht kenne, haben Erwin geopfert [=have sacrificed Erwin]. Der Fremde [=the stranger] ist wahrscheinlich [=probably] ein Priester. Er hat für Erwin einen seltsamen Tanz aufgeführt [=he performed a strange dance for Erwin]. Mama liegt mit einer fremden Frau auf dem Wohnzimmerteppich [=living room carpet]. Papa und der Priester haben ihnen bestimmt irgendein Mittel gegeben [=Daddy and the priest probably gave them some drug]. Oliver:OK, Scotty, Mission beendet, beamen Sie uns rauf.

Herr Neugart:Es ist ein Wunder! Hier, mein Erwin—gestern früh ist er gestorben [=yesterday morning he died].
