Course Description

World Language and Cultures in room 105 is designed around the IB Learner Profile themes and includes the 3 fundamental concepts of the MYP:

1) Holistic Learning: students learn new vocabulary to make connections to similar spellings in English (including the areas of interaction within each unit)

2) Intercultural awareness: appreciation of other cultures and how they relate to our own.

3) Communication:

a) Speaking - with peers and in presentations

b) Writing: short answers and phrases

c) Reading - short stories and student work samples

d) Listening- conversations and audio resources (movies, music, etc.)

IB LEANER PROFILE THEMES AND ACTIVITIES

1). Inquirers & Thinkers: Students are exposed to vocabulary and grammar in order to make sense of their new language.

2). knowledgeable: Students are encouraged to build on previously learned vocabulary to develop better understanding of the new language.

3) Communicators: Students are guided to use the new language to express their ideas and information with each other.

4). Principled & Caring: Students are reminded to take responsibility for their own abilities and actions as they show compassion and respect for others.

5). Open-minded: Students are directed to become more open to the values, and traditions of other cultures.

6). Risk-takers: Students are encouraged to approach the new language with courage.

7). Balanced: Students understand the challenges of learning a new language and to develop a sense of balance with their other classes.

8). Reflective: Students check their work and progress in order to support their learning of the new language.

MYP Areas of Interaction (AoI)

Students are exposed to activities using the following areas of interaction (AOI)

1. Approaches to Learning - learning to learn, i.e. recognizing patterns in verb conjugations

2. Environments - appreciating our environments, i.e. comparisons between rainforests and our desert

3. Health & Social Education - seeking a balance between physical and mental health as well as learning to interact with people in our society, i.e. learning about celebrations in other cultures

4. Community & Service - awareness of needs in the immediate and far-reaching communities and taking action, i.e. educating the student body about the value of learning a second language

5. Human Ingenuity - recognizing man's creativity and his impact on the world, i.e. arts & architecture appreciation

Methodology

Through direct teaching, group work, writing assignments, reading, listening to YouTube recordings, class discussions, and projects, students will complete 4 units about World Language & Cultures

Unit 1: Talking About Me, Myself and I

Unit 2: Talking About my Home.

Unit 3: Talking about the Community.

Unit 4: Talking about the World
