Dear Cousins,
My name is Glenda Rae Martindale King, my daughter Julianne McCracken forwarded me your e-mail inquiries about my grandmother Helen Agnes Civilla Lewis Martindale. I will try to answer some of your questions, although grandmother passed around 2 years before I was born. So I will start at the beginning.
What I know about William Lyman Lewis and Helen Agnes Civilla is from conversations with my mother Verla Martindale and genealogy papers and journal I received after mother’s death.
In mother’s journal she stated that Grandpa and Grandma lived in Oakley, Idaho when my father David Ruland Martindale was born in 1898. He was the fourth child and was only 5 years old when Grandpa died. I have also heard different stories of his death. Mother stated that he died of a heart attack while working on the Milner Dam, which is located north of Twin Falls, Idaho in January of 1905. I had also, heard a number of years ago, that it was thought to have been murder. The only newspaper clipping I have simply states “Lime Martindale of Oakley, died at Milner last Friday. He was brought home Sunday and Monday was laid to rest in the town cemetery. Lime was a good and big hearted man.”
Mother states Grandmother was left with 6 children and Aunt Bea was born in March. They lived in Oakley for a while but Grandmother was unable to provide for the children there. I don’t know what year, but Grandmother moved to Jerome, Idaho to work in a laundry. She was unable to keep all the children.
I’ll divert a little here. I’m not sure what information you have on the children so I will provide what information I have.

As far as I know my father was the only one to have children.
Now back to grandma- She took my father , David to Albion, Id to live with his Grandpa Lewis. Uncle Rod went to live with Aunt Hellie Gorringe and her husband. Dad lived with them for awhile and Grandpa took him up the hill to an old bachelor who had goats. Dad didn’t like it there and ran away, spent the night in Grandpa’s haystack and headed out for Jerome the next day. Mother doesn’t state in her journal how old he was but I remember hearing he was about 11. He walked most of the way to Jerome. When he got there Grandmother had taken the girls and gone to Gooding where she and Aunt Dorothy worked in a laundry. The house they had been living in was empty , but the lady next door took Dad in to help her with a mentally retarded boy. So he helped with the boy and turned the hand washer for her all summer. Grandmother came and got him in the fall and took him to Oakley to Uncle Athan Martindale’s. He lived with them through high school. When he was 17 he went to Washington State to see Grandmother and joined the navy. He served during WWI. That is all the information mother wrote in her journal. I remember mother telling me that Grandmother had died of breast cancer. It is my speculation that Grandmother had gone to Eureka where Her youngest daughter Bea was living and she must have died there and they brought her back to San Bernardino where she lived to bury her. I have a picture of her and Aunt Bea, I don’t know when it was taken.
I guess now I can tell you a little about my brother’s and sisters.

Most of the information that I have on the Lewis line I got from a copy of research called
“From Monarchs to Mormons by Clara Lewis Hall. It was written about 1959. Clara was the only living grandchild of James Stapleton Lewis and Anna Jones. The research starts in Virginia 1650. If you don’t have a copy of this and would like one I would love to share it with you.
