Programme Outline

Miss Lee, a former English teacher of a Primary 2 class, returns to school one day. She watches a group of pupils playing badminton and another group rendering a recorder performance. All the pupils, except Tommy, are enthusiastic to share with her their favourite pastimes. Tommy who does very well academically is neither good at sports nor music. Miss Lee encourages him to develop reading as his hobby and brings him and other pupils to the public library to read and borrow books. Miss Lee also brings them to her friend’s shop that scans pictures and photos on T-shirts, mugs and cushions.

Communicative Functions:

Examples:

I play badminton with Paul as a team. We’re going to take part in a competition.

I always play the recorder on Sundays.

Language Skills

Speaking

-develop written text by putting words in a logical order to make meaningful phrases or sentences

Pre-viewing Activities

  1. Motivate the class by asking the pupils what they like to do in their spare time. List the pupils’ answers on the board.

Examples:

swimming, playing computer games, playing the piano, etc.

The teacher can also share with the class his/her favourite pastimes.

  1. Introduce the following vocabulary/expressions to the class if necessary:

favourite, pastimes, hobbies, practise the recorder, School Music Festival,

musicians, serious, scan, artistic, thoughtful and interesting.

While-viewing Activity

Make sure that the pupils have the COPYMASTER 1 and pencils on their desks before viewing the programme. Explain to them that the programme is about favourite pastimes. Pupils have to note down what the children in the programme like to do in their spare time in the space provided in Part I of the worksheet.

Post-viewing Activities

  1. Teachers ask pupils what hobby Tommy has developed at the end of the programme.

  1. In part II of the COPYMASTERs 1 & 2, teachers ask pupils to talk about their favourite pastimes. Pupils form into groups of four and take turns to ask each other their favourite pastimes. Teachers can write the question on the blackboard.

Examples:

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I like reading books.

After the class has completed the task, teachers can ask each group leader to read out the hobbies of their group members. While doing so, teachers compile their hobbies on the blackboard by means of a simple graph. At the end, pupils can identify the most popular pastimes of the class and write them down on the worksheet.

  1. In Part III, pupils have to transfer the information in the speech bubble to a written description about Tommy.

Answers:

He goes to the library to borrow books every Saturday.

  1. Pupils can then continue to do Part IV on the COPYMASTER 3 and write descriptions about themselves.
