MY CALL, COMMISSION AND COMMENDATION
My Call before Commission and Commendation – Pt. 1
By K C. Ung
Extract from: A Hebrew Word for the Day:Key Words from the Old Testament.
Nov. 1, 2016 Earthen Vessel II Corinth. 4:7
[Gk. ostrakinos, skeuos]
"We have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us."
Paul was relentlessly attacked by false teachers in Corinth, who tried to undermine him as being without oratorical skills, without good looks, and just plain common. How could such a person, they insisted, have any credibility in what he teaches?
As the adage goes, Paul was "between a rock and a hard place." He needed to defend the gospel, which these Judaizers were undermining, but how could he defend himself without appearing proud?
His answer was, in effect, "You are quite correct. I am nothing but a common, cheap, clay pot, with no value of my own, but I contain the most priceless message on earth, the gospel of Jesus Christ. The value is not in me, but in God."
What a blessing it is to be a clay pot!
