Job Title:Weekend Duty Manager (casual Friday to Sunday)

Salary: £10.00/hour

Job Purpose

The post holder will provide effective leadership and support for a largely volunteer based front of house team. Working as part of the Visitor Experience Team, the post holder will help to lead the best possible visitor experience at all stages of our visitor journey by putting visitors first and promoting the Garden Museum’s brand values.

Background

The Garden Museum has recently re-opened after a major 18 months capital project. We have undergone an exciting transformation, which has restored the ancient structure of St Mary-at-Lambeth and transformed it into a modern museum. The Garden Museum is an independent charity and receives no government funding. Our strength is in a combination of successful commercial activities and donations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading the front of house team on a day-to-day basis to ensure the delivery of an exceptional visitor experience.
  • Oversee and support a variably aged volunteer team who makes up the majority of our front of house staff.
  • Ensure that all visitors are provided with a consistently excellent welcome at the admissions desk, shop and throughout the museum.
  • Ensure all visitor complaints are resolved in a positive manner.
  • Encourage visitor spend and enhance visitor experience.
  • Deputise the Retail Manager in her absence.
  • Ensure all staff and volunteers understand how to administer transactions through the POS System.
  • Ability to confidently approach the POS System which is used for all shop and admission sales.
  • Regularly monitor the condition and cleanliness of front of house facilities, report issues or take corrective action as appropriate.
  • Ensure all staff and volunteers on duty are aware of events, visitors and key messages for each day.
  • Communicate clearly and cohesively across the museum’s departments.
  • Promote good relationships with external organisations.
  • Assist Retail Manager and Volunteer Coordinator in managing staff rotas, to efficiently control staff levels.
  • Ensure all administration requirements such as front of house end-of-day reports are completed in line with Garden Museum guidelines.
  • Liaise with Curator and Head Technician to ensure that security protocols for collections and loans are followed.
  • Use initiative to react to situations.
  • Manage the coordination of emergency procedures to ensure the safety of all visitors, staff and volunteers.
  • Act as qualified First Aider (training will be provided) and as the initial contact for first aid incidents.
  • Attend relevant training opportunities and participate in staff development initiatives to improve knowledge and working practice.
  • Carry out ad hoc duties as requested.

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Proven experience working in a Front of House or customer facing role in an intermediate position.
  • Demonstrable passion for delivering high quality visitor experience.
  • Must have knowledge of the security of the collection, and balancing it with visitor services.
  • Awareness of security, Health & Safety in a public facing environment.
  • Experience of managing a team in either a customer service or sales environment.
  • Good communicator with the ability to connect and share knowledge and expertise with a range of different audiences.
  • Willingness to work with volunteers and develop relationships.
  • Enthusiasm for the collection, programmes and themes of the Garden Museum.
  • Reliable and flexible.
  • Committed team player.
  • Highly numerate with experience working on a POS System.
  • Cash handling experience.
  • Flexibility to attend shifts at short notice if required.
  • Physically fit in lifting and carting furniture such as displays, tables or chairs.
  • Ability to commit to weekend work.

Desirable

  • First Aid qualification.
  • Experience in evacuation procedures.
  • Foreign language.
  • Good IT skills.
  • Experience of working with school, community and a variety of education groups with an understanding of their needs.
  • Experience working within an Arts and Heritage site.

Hours of Work

This is a casual zero hours position; the hours are directed by the Retail Manager and Volunteer Coordinator. You will be required to work such additional hours as are necessary for proper performance of your duties. These hours may be changed with reasonable notice.
