Description:

Students will with partner up and pick a multicultural literature book that interest them. They will read the book and then locate prefixes and suffixes within the text. They must also include a summary of their book. When every group has finished, students will present and share their book.

Objective:

Students will read a multicultural literature book, give an oral/written summary, and identify six prefixes and/or suffixes within their book with 85% accuracy.

Standards:

ELA5R1 The student demonstrates comprehension and shows evidence of a warrantedand responsible explanation of a variety of literary and informational texts.

g. Makes perceptive and well-developed connections.

ELA5R3 The student understands and acquires new vocabulary and uses itcorrectly in reading and writing. The student

a. Reads a variety of texts and incorporates new words into oral and written language.

c. Determines the meaning of unfamiliar words using knowledge of common roots, suffixes, and prefixes.

e. Identifies the meaning of common prefixes (e.g., un-, re-, dis-).

Assessment/Evaluation:

Students will be assessed/evaluated on the accuracy of their book summary and their identification of prefixes and suffixes.

Adaptations:

-Find more or less than six prefixes and suffixes

-Assign books to students on their reading grade level

-Allow more time if needed

Materials:

-16 to 20 multicultural literature books (depends on the number of students)

-Prefix/Suffix Book Summary Paper (see below)

Procedures:

  1. Students must have some previous knowledge of prefixes and suffixes before completing this activity.
  2. Allow students to pick a partner and line up two by two. When the come up hand the two the Prefix/Suffix Book Summary Paper, and allow the partners to pick their book.
  3. Give students a good twenty to thirty minutes to read the book and complete the form on it.
  4. When students are finished have them come to the front of the room and share/present their book.
