At the conclusion of this course, students will:

  • Describe the history and evolution of Orff-Schulwerk
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Orff-Schulwerk by performing and creating in the elemental style
  • Identify the 75 images of art by title and artist
  • Have a clearer understanding of their attitudes and beliefs concerning cultural difference
  • Have a clearer understanding of their identities and roles as future educators
  • Understand Austrian history from a cultural, musical and historical perspective

It is expected every student will participate willingly and enthusiastically in classroom discussions and activities. We learn best from interacting with one another. Each class will include discussions based on the reading assignments. Articles should be read thoroughly. Your contributions to class discussions should reflect preparedness, insight and curiosity.

Regular attendance with promptness and with assignments completed reflects a positive, accepting attitude in university training/education. Attendance will be taken in each class. More than two absences will result in a failing grade. At this point you should prepare yourself for the professional world. We would not expect a professional to skip work; we do not expect you to skip class. If special circumstances arise, please speak with Dr. Henry prior to an absence or immediately after an absence.

More than 3 unexcused absences will result in a failing grade

  • Three tardies will be counted as one absence

Only university excused absences will be accepted. You must present notification to your professor, which may be obtained from the Office of the Dean of Students.

Assignments are to be turned in on the assigned date. If for some reason an assignment is late, you may turn it in on the following class day and receive a grade deduction. No assignments will be accepted after this time.

This course includes an 8-day trip to Austria: October 17 – October 26. Speak to your professors immediately to inform them of your absence during this week. Your names will also be submitted to the Dean of Students for a university excused absence.

According to University policy, students may drop a course by September 8 (instructor approval not required); October 3 (instructor approval required); October 28 (instructor approval needed, W or WF may be assigned); November 19 (instructor may drop a student with a grade of WF for nonattendance).
