Mt Lyford

“Pokaka”

Ski Chalet

Holiday House

33 Charwell Drive, Mt. Lyford.

How do we get there?

Mt Lyford is 140K, about 2 hours drive north of Christchurch. Drive along HW 1 through Amberly to Waipara. Turn left into HW 7 and drive through Waikari, on to Culverden. About 3K past Culverden turn right into HW 70 sign posted Mt Lyford and go to Waiau 20km. Opposite the hotel in Waiau turn sharp left and take the Inland Kaikoura road (still HW 70) for 22K to the Mt. Lyford turnoff, note that the sign says 30 K which indicates the distance to the ski field. Look for the entrance to the Mt. Lyford village on the left, just before the prominent Mt. Lyford Lodge. Drive up the hill for 3K. You will find a map of the Village on your right. Just passed here turn right into Terako Terrace (the third road to the right from the main road) At the T intersection turn right and follow the hairpin down into Charwell Drive on your left. At the end of this road is Pokaka Chalet, 33. The final stretch of road is steep and narrow but quite useable in good conditions. If you get lost go back to the map.

What do we provide?

There is one queen-size and one single bed in the main bedroom and in the second bedroom there is one queen-size mattresses and two singles, all with pillows, sheets and duvets. Towels are provided.

There are two toilets, large bath with a shower over it. The kitchen is fully appointed with microwave, oven, fridge /freezer, washing machine and a drying room. and washing line.

Shower tip: to get the shower going well run the hot H2O tap at the kitchen sink until it releases air bubbles, and runs hot, then turn it off and go upstairs and try the shower. I don’t know why but it works a treat.

There is a stereo, CD player and some CDs. Bring more of your own CDs. There is no TV reception, but there is a small TV and VCR.

The landline is 03 315 6008. Make toll calls collect or pay for them with your fee. Cell phone coverage is patchy with no coverage at the house.

Bring your own food. The nearest store is in Waiau. Excellent meals can be had at the Mt. Lyford Lodge.

Internet Broadband is available free of charge. The connection will show up as Thomson0FD561 the password is 71DF90CEB0 (it is the wep number on the back of the router.)

The fire place is very efficient. Leave the ash in it to insulate the floor of the fire. The lever on the front is pushed to the left for hot and to the right to turn down. The damper is on the chimney. Vertical is open.
