  1. Did you find the orientation provided during the first session of HSCI 511 to be adequate?

Figure 5 Adequacy of the program

  • How could this orientation be improved?
  • More awareness on current healthcare system than just theoretical part
  • Did not take the class. Class was waived
  • There should be more emphasis on the format of the program
  • For me personally, the class was not necessary, especially as my major was similar to HA
  1. If you did not take HSCI 511, did you meet with Dr. Reagan for advisement and orientation at the beginning of your first semester of study?

Figure 6Did you meet with Dr.Reagan for advisement?

  1. Evaluation of interactions throughout the course of study with the graduate coordinator.

Figure 7 Interactions with the graduate coordinator

How could advisement be improved?

  • HSCI 515 & other intro classes should be taken earlier
  • It was excellent. I don’t think it needs more improvement
  • Does not need improvement
  • Improving flexibility such as extended hours and more days availability.
  • Advisement could be better by suggesting students options so they can finish the program earlier
  • More emphasis on employment
  • Encourage students to seek advisement more often
  • Done well.
  • It would be helpful if the adviser helped students in (?) resume and career planning once a semester
  • To me it was alwaysexcellent experience with my coordinator
  • More availability, more interaction from professors
  1. Was the quality of students in the program what you expected?

Figure 8 Quality of students in the program

If no, please explain.

  • A lot of students entering the program have a false image of what they will be coming out of the program.
  • Below my expectations. Some individuals could not communicate effectively via writing and this disturbed me
  • I noticed that may times when a group project, presentation, paper was incorporated to course I was always doing UCLA projects. I would have like to get some insight of other organizations but it seemed we were limited on the member of facility exposure meaning, we were often asked who work ata facility and those who did would be the championIwader of the group for the project since we had exposure and experience with the facility/ organization.
  • Too many individual in the program with no experience made it difficult to interact with those individual for group projects.
  • There were many students in the program who had huge language barriers. Being placed in groups with such students automatically places the other students in a disadvantage.
  • Personal opinion. Not sure how some of the students actually pass the classes
  • People who have more work experience and knowledge treat individuals with little work experience as looser
  • Many students who are English speakers make fun of the foreign speaking students. And people who are already working in the field feel superior to non-workers & it creates a 2-tier-system in classes
  • It was very disproportionate of students of different work background experience. So people have divided in groups. They were not behaving like adults an they were promoting their rude behavior among groups. People who were in health care fields feel they are better and on pedestal and they humiliate others. Some faculties were also on their sides. Some students who feel they are superior took all class time for their personal discussion on subjects who waste the class time. The faculties did not stop them and let the class flow well. It was not a class for some mature adults pursuing a higher education level.
  • With a high demand industry I was surprised at the lack of core competencies. Some students displayed. (e.i.commutation skills, critical thinking)
  • The incorporation of group work/peer evaluation allowed me to work with other students and learn that the writing, speaking, and critical thinking varied widely. Many students were unable to write grammatically correct and/ or participate in oral presentations due to their inability to speak the language.
  • More students need health care experience so that they can relate to the material and be useful in group projects.
  • Did not expect so many ESL/ foreign students. Not a bad thing, just unexpected.
  1. Were there any classes you would recommend deleting form the program?
  • IT/ Informatics
  • 510 & 511 & health status could ecombined. Third party payer needs to be re-structured
  • 3rd party payers; professor was terrible
  • I would recommend six sigma courses and improvement of the finance class
  • 510 & 511 because we go through the same information during the core classes
  • Integrative seminar. It was not useful at all. Did not see the purpose for this class.
  • International health. It’s very basic and does not have any good and helpful contents. It has a lot of redundancy to it such as different projects that does not have anything to do with the Couse.
  1. Are there any content areas which were not addressed which you think should be added?
  • I wish faculties were able to bring real life examples of different scenarios in presenting the subject. Reading off the PowerPoint did not help us. We did need real-life stories to learn from.
  • Physician transactions
  • Business planning and development
  • Project management, business development
  • HIM should be a mandatory class
  • Finance should be more application,. Concentrating more on spreadsheets interpreting what it is NOT more of terms.
  • Career development course
  • Practical knowledge of tools like dashboards, quality (data analysis)
  • More Econ. & Excel & qualitative analysis classes. Since that’s what they want from us when (we are ) going to as interview. They ask about statistical analysis
  • HR. Unions, communications
  • Research methods
  • Project management, place emphasis on day-to day operating of managerial potions, business development
  1. What did you think of your graduate field experience?
  • Length:
  • Short period to make a contribution
  • OK
  • OK
  • I did not learn anything & it was a total waste of time since the hospital placed me in a place where there was no connection with healthcare & I was just by myself figuring out what to do & the preceptor did not care about me at all
  • great
  • it was just a semester but I continued for my personal benefit of work experience (11 months)
  • 9 months.
  • 1 sem.
  • Fair
  • 5 months
  • Fair
  • Ok
  • Decent
  • Okay
  • Too short
  • Adequate
  • Excellent
  • It is just waste of time. No learning!!!!
  • Projects
  • good
  • OK
  • OK
  • great.
  • Call center transition
  • Perfect for me.
  • NICHE program at KP.
  • Fair
  • Home care agency
  • Fair
  • Should be better defined
  • Decent
  • Was up to me; nothing to say
  • Not very rewarding
  • Could have beenmore beneficial
  • Excellent
  • It is so sad!! I wish CSUN offer places that they were more concern about CSUN students, but they made u to find a place. They did not offer any useful connection because they did not prepared for that.
  • How could the field experience be improved?
  • Much more pressure needs to be done on putting time limit for field experience (1000 hours) & student need to be placed somewhere set by the school. People out in the field do not take students service & do not care about us. So we could not learn anything
  • I am already in the field so it was good for me to take on a project outside of my responsibilities
  • Partner with organizations to create easier gateways for students to get internships (MPH is partnered with Kaiser).
  • More rigid structured
  • More help in finding work & specific project
  • More meeting with preceptor to discuss challengesassociated with project and availability to provide guidance
  • Graduate program should assign the students to corresponding preceptors
  • They should provide the field experience place as early as possible
  • More meetings with professor to keep track of progress and offer advice
  • More help finding an internship and more support from the professor would be good
  • I was lucky enough to already be in an internship, but a lot of my classmates could not get positioned in one
  • Could have less documentation and better guidelines
  • Information prior to the semester should be given. This will allow students to identify areas and preceptors to affiliate with. This should be the time when can explore are that one may be interested in.
  • Students should do rotations for their F.E to get a better understanding of different functions within the healthcare fields
  • Improvement not needed
  • The faculty must contract with different health care setting and have a place to refer the students not everyone is employed in health care setting and has connection. The faculties did not do anything.
  1. What do you think of the comprehensive examination?

Figure 9Adequacy of comprehensive examination

  • Length of exam
  • OK
  • Good except for strategic planning
  • Need more time for longer sections
  • Ok
  • Too short for some sections
  • Each exam should have been longer (or shorter questions)
  • Too short
  • Fair
  • 2 hours each section

  • OK (long)
  • Format?
  • Needs improvement

  • Need to be standardized
  • 2 days in a row is not ideal
  • Good
  • More consistency would help
  • Fair
  • Essay response
  • Good
  • Perfectly Adequate
  • Good
  • Not practical
  • Good
  • Good
  • OK
  • OK
  • How could it be improved?
  • Better orientation and preparation guidance
  • I wish instead of comp. exam, we had more hours of field training experience. It would be more beneficial if we start it in the second year of education
  • Add more time for longer sections or limit the number of questions
  • Standardize the section
  • Provide a comprehensive review and standardize test questions
  • Should be less memorization; more hands on practicality through a capstone like project
  • Longer breaks between each sections
  • Standardized question (eg everyone having A-D questions)
  • More time could be given for the strategic planning and OD section
  • There should be a format/ guide for every subject and they should excludetopics that is really not needed to increase review concentration
  • A project based capstone, allocating student to show their ability in applying the material rather than reacting(?) memorized information. Also a capstone project is a potential tool that you can use and present to future employers
  • Structured & stress questions basedupon time
  • Examination is fine but means nothing if the program is non-accredited
  • Do not have too many sub-questions so there is time to answer everything & review answers
  1. Did you find the faculty competent and adequately prepared to assist you in your learning?

Figure 10 Faculty competent and adequacy

  • There are two groups of faculties: 1) they are not competent enough to teach this major. They don’t have enough information and skills. 2) they have skill and knowledge but are not motivated and do not have energy to teach classes. They don’t care about students. It is good to retire the old and less motivated faculties for the young and motivate ones. For quantitative analysis and Economics and finance, it is better to assign an instructor who is more energized and more articulated. He current instructor was not able to teach the course. These courses are very important and we learned mothering. Also for strategic planning, it was a fair class but it could be more beneficial if the instructor present more information in class. But the instructor gave us a guide on how to completeproject before clarifying all the points on the study guide.
  • Part time faculties coming in for particular classes had a hard time capturing student’s attention.
  • Finance needs to be restructured. Frazier, although a very nice man, seemed puzzled and not enthusiastic about the subject
  • Some professors need to be pushed into retirement. Others need to stick to teaching course content instead of discussing personal matters for the first 30 minutes of each class.
  • Some faculties are very knowledgeable but cannot teach. We need a young faculty who are energetic & are passionate about their students. Some faculties need to retire & let the new people who are working in the current workforce to come & teach.
  • Could better assist students in career planning
  • The full time educators were excellent. Part time not so much except for Dr. Chan
  • I feel that we could benefit from more faculty in the field currently
  1. Did you find the grading fair?

Figure 91 Fairness of grading

  • Caliber of students in the classes made it difficult to achieve the grads I wanted because of requirement to work in groups/ peer evaluation.
  • Sometimes grading was based on favorite subject or favorite students. Faculties should consider students’ skill and feedback based on their knowledge on grading and do not grade according to their personal interests.
  • Group grade was unfair
  • At the most, some students got higher grades even though they did not contribute to class discussions. Some people are just not good test takers. This was not takenintoconsideration.
  • The team assignments are not always fair. The burden of the work tends to fall on those who care, yet all get the grades
  • However, I had a feeling my 619 grade was unfair and biased.
  1. Any special experiences?
  • College bowl
  • Presentations work well with getting rid of public speaking
  • Professor Esparza, I am thankful to you. Your parent like words opened my eyes to get more awareness about the HC system.
  • IHI was (?) experience for me. From the planning of events to participating in the events. Great experience.
  • There was a great lecture in Prof. Frenser’s class who did an awesome job presetting the material. She was very dynamic & engaging. I would recommend considering her for finance if you are thinking about expanding the program.
  • Dr. Chan’s teaching style was very impressive. I liked the way she brought outside experienced people to share their knowledge with us.
  • The college bowl is the best experience I ever had on the program
  • Film screening sponsored by Dr. Rubino’s leadership class and IHI activities
  • Really enjoyed visiting with executives in hospitals
  • None
  • Current events were great. It kept us up to date
  • ACHE-HCE was very useful. I recommend that all student go to the events that they put on
  • I graduated today but it was not a real learning for me. The program quality is very low and if I’m going to rate the program out of 10, I will give a 5. I have not learned as much as I expected empirically field experience was the worst of them.
  1. What did you like best about the MSHA Program?
  • I enjoyed my fellow students’ knowledge and passion and the professors were very knowledgeable
  • Relationships gained, knowledge
  • I have nothing more to complain about.
  • The friends & connectivity
  • It is best program for students who have healthcare background
  • The leadership class & strategic planning
  • All the professors were very approachable and helpful when I had questions in class and outside of class
  • Professors were approachable, knowledgeable, challenging
  • The professors and classmates
  • Managed care & third party payer class by Farber
  • Low cost, the program had a several top-notch professors that made up for the ones that were lacking
  • Made a bigger network with my classmates who are in the field already. Looking forward to seeing where we all end up. Professors were very nice and approachable and I feel I can contact them in the future
  • Applicable classes such as strategic planning
  • I liked the range of courses offered
  • Hours
  • The quality class, he health care status class. Also I liked classes were in he afternoon
  1. How can the program be improved?
  • Please look into the part time teachers that do not add value
  • Comps. does not show capability of student in regards to practical & (?) on knowledge
  • I think quantitative & finance should be taught before field experience
  • More practical capstone project. Alumni mixers enhancing networking opportunities, More career development & guidance
  • They should concentrate on financial management. Expose students to a lot of financial spread sheets and interpret them. Be able to determine what is good and bad financial spreadsheets
  • The program should have basic intro courses fist (health policy, current event, how to do a case study). Then develop leadership skills, strategic planning. Greatest emphasis on healthcare not hospitals, networkingevents, emphasis on administrative/ managerial tasks, work with other masters programs?, Joint classes?
  • Incorporate more real-world application to the theories and information contained in the text-book.
  • Focus needs to put on practical side of the program. Find a placement for students in field experience & make them rotate in different department so they will get on experience about different
  • Review professors teaching competencies and possibly mandate review classes to increase teaching ability
  • Please help with more networking events. We are constantly told we need to, but CSUN network is small and we work hard to pass because we want to have great careers with meaning in the future, but we need to means to do it. USC and UCLA were our constant competitors whenever we went to networking events, and their networks are huge. It would be nice if I went to one of my professors and told them I was looking for a job, they could give me a list of contacts.
  • There need to be more useful and applicable classes and faculty should (?) a more active (?) students’ career development
  • I think the program can be improved by selecting the part-time professors with more consideration
  • The program must comply with accreditation first and the last. They should inform the students before they enter the program that give them the flexibility to change their major
  1. Would you recommend the MSHA program to your colleagues?
