Ms. Yakel’s (Yvon-Moreau) Room 213

Classroom Procedures/Expectations

General Philosophy

Our general philosophy is that we respect and care about the well-being of each and every student in our class. You will find that I do not post “rules” in my classroom. That is because I trust that each and every one of us knows and understands what is acceptable in a classroom at this point. I believe in having many conversations, being creative, taking risks, and having fun in class. This can only work, however, if we agree to and abide by some basic expectations that we have for each other.

Entering the School/Class

Please enter the classroom and sit down in a respectful manner. Please do not sit in my chair or on my desk…I went to University for 6 years to earn this spot! Feel free to talk quietly to your classmates about the latest celeb news, your plans for the evening, what you have for lunch, or anything else that interests you! Another option would be to pick up a book and read quietly until you see the lesson is about to begin, but it is expected that you are quiet and respectful upon entering the classroom before the lesson begins.

Coming Prepared

It is your responsibility to ensure you come to every class prepared with all supplies you may need, including a PENCIL! It is absolutely… positively… definitely…without a doubt…Ms. Yakel’s (Yvon-Moreau) BIGGEST pet peeve when students come to class without a pencil. There are times when you may also need your colouring supplies as well, but will usually be given a heads up if so! Otherwise, you should ALWAYS be carrying your subject binder, a pencil, your agenda, and a book. IF you occasionally forget your pencil, Ms. Yakel (Yvon-Moreau) has a special stash to borrow from. Please ensure to write your name on the whiteboard, and give it back before leaving the classroom.

Lockers

There are no locker breaks between classes. It is expected that you take all of your supplies for morning classes with you in the A.M, and then all of your afternoon class supplies with you after lunch for your P.M classes.

Announcements

I expect absolutely no talking at all during any school wide announcements, of course including all morning announcements in your TA. These are generally very important so please listen attentively, without talking, during these announcements.

Speaking in the classroom

It is absolutely… positively… definitely…without a doubt…Ms. Yakel’s (Yvon-Moreau) BIGGEST pet peeve when people speak out of turn! We all deserve a chance to share our thoughts and ideas, however it is required at ALL times to raise your hand when you have something you would like to share. There will be absolutely NO shouting out or interruptions aloud in room 213!

Leaving the classroom

When you need to leave the classroom at any time (washroom, water, etc.) please make sure to ask the teacher first, and take a hall pass with you! Leaving the classroom shouldn’t be a regular occurrence, it is important you use your lunch break for the washroom.

When you hear Ms. Yakel (Yvon-Moreau) Countdown…

When you hear Ms. Yakel (Yvon-Moreau) counting down from 5… this is your signal! By the time I reach 1, I expect that your eyes and ears are open, books out, sitting in your desk, ready for what’s next!

Agenda

We will use our agenda book every day. It is very important that you do not misplace this agenda book. We will write any notes, events, homework, etc. in the agenda during the last slot I see you every day and I will always be sure to sign before you leave!

Homework

Ms. Yakel (Yvon-Moreau) will always give time in class for every assignment. Sometimes however, there will be homework to complete. Once we are in the flow of things, if your homework is incomplete after its due date, it will be expected that you stay on your own time to finish with Ms. Yakel (Yvon-Moreau). It will be an expectation that you take this responsibility.

Handing in work/Getting work back

There are subject bins for handing in completed assignments. Each subject has its own bin, and there is also a handed back bin, which I will fill with assignments that have already been marked.

Guest Teachers/Para-Professionals/ Guest Speakers/ Student Teachers/Interns

I will expect that you treat everyone in this building with the utmost respect. I expect that each of you will be polite, kind and helpful. Show everyone the leaders you really are!

Independent Reading

It is important that everyone has a novel to read with them at all times. At the start of every ELA class we will all read for 15-20 minutes. If you forgot your novel, there is a classroom library to choose from. You should also regularly be taking novels out from the school library, and of course books from home are always welcome too!

When you are finished an assignment early…(Extend your learning!)

You may approach me and give me a high five/fist bump for a job well done. After that, please respect the other students in the class by not being a distraction. Please refer to our Extend Your Learning chart at the back of the room. Here you fill find many options of how to best use your time when you are finished your assignment…the options include:

  • Complete any OTHER unfinished/over-due assignments
  • Read Anything!
  • Write in your journal
  • Play a quiet math game
  • Help a neighbour …quietly and on task!
  • Independently sketch in your sketchbook
  • Clean/organize our classroom space (if it needs!)

When you are feeling unhappy, confused, or maybe just need a break…

Sometimes we aren’t having the best day, it’s human and Ms. Yakel (Yvon-Moreau) understands! If something is bothering you, you’re confused, need a break..etc. please respectfully and quietly ask to speak to me at my desk or in the hall. I am ALWAYS open to discussing matters with you but I would prefer to do so privately in order to avoid distracting others.

When you are absent

Being in grade 6 now comes more responsibility! If you are absent it will always be your job to catch up on what you missed. Once you have read through the materials, check with a buddy if you have any questions. If at that point, you still do not understand, of course I am here to help/direct you if needed! I am always also willing to stay in at lunch if you need some extra time!

End of day/Leaving School

If you are being dismissed from my class, we will always ensure to stack our chairs and clean our workspace (including the floor!) before leaving. Sometimes if clean-up is done before the last bell, we can sometimes play a quick game to end the day on a fun note!
