Why Do We Have Physical Education?

My goal is to prepare you to meet the demands of our ever-changing society. Physical fitness, health, stress reduction and cooperation are ways to deal with the many expectationsdemands of our fast-paced society. I want you to understand the benefits of regular physical activity and acquire an active, healthy lifestyle. As an emotionally, academically and physically fit personyou will live a longer, healthier, happier and more productive life.

Grading Overview

80% of your trimester grade will come from daily points.

20% of your trimester grades will come from class assignments and homework.

Daily Points

Each day, every student is given 10 points. Points however, may be deducted for the following reasons:

absencesimproper uniform

tardinessinappropriate shoes

wearing jewelryunprepared for class

disruptive behaviorlack of cooperation

lack of participationpoor attitude

The easiest way to earn an ‘A’ in PE is to show up every day with appropriate attire, maintain a positive attitude, and participate in all activities to the best of your ability.

Think: attitude, effort and participation.

Class Expectations

1.BE ON TIME. When the second bell rings you should be in the changing room. You will have 5 minutes to change and be in your class’sthe space designated space for your class for the day.

2.CHECK THE WHITEBOARD IN THE CHANGING ROOMFOR YOUR TEACHER’SDIRECTIONS FOR THE DAY.

3. WEAR APPROPRIATE SHOES AND P.E. UNIFORM TO CLASS

4. BE PREPARED FOR ANY WEATHER

5. SAFETY FIRST. ACT CAREFULLY. MAKE GOOD DECISIONS.

6. DO WHAT IS ASKED OF YOU THE FIRST TIME.

7. TAKE PRIDE IN WHAT YOU DO. DO YOUR BEST EVERYDAY.

8. REPORT ANY INJURY OR INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR TO A TEACHER IMMEDIATELY.

9. SHOW RESPECT FOR YOURSELF, EACHOTHER, AND YOUR TEACHER. Treat people the way you would like to be treated

10. USE EQUIPMENT ONLY IN THE MANNER FOR WHICH IT IS INTENDED.

11. FOLLOW THE RULES OF THE GAME OR ACTIVITY. They are designed for your safety.

12. HAVE FUN!

Changing Room Expectations

1.Enter and leave the changing room through the appropriate doors.

2. No students may be in the changing room at any time without teacher supervision.

3. If you are tardy and the changing room has closed, you will not be able to dress out and you will be considered a non-suit. Points will be deducted from your grade.

4. Clear the area around your assigned cubby when you leave.

5. Do not bring valuables into the changing room. MVMS is not responsible for lost or stolen articles.

6. Use ONLY the cubby assigned to you.

7. There is no running, horseplay, eating or drinking allowed in the changing room.

8. No sprays, glass containers, curling irons, etc. are allowed in the changing room.

9. Respect everything! Do not touch anything that doesn’t belong to you. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.

10. Do not play on the benches, railings or cubbies.

Mill Valley Middle School Physical Education Dress Code:

Every studentYou must:

  • Wear appropriate athletic shoes.
  • Wear navy blue mesh basketball shorts.
  • Wear a gray cotton shirt.
  • Have nothing other than undergarments under your PE uniform.
  • On cold days, wear blue or gray sweats over your PE uniform.
  • Have your name printed on the inside tag of each piece of your uniform:
  • LAST NAME AND FIRST INITIAL

Consequences for no uniform or shoes:

  • 1st Time –Zero points for the day.Teacher calls home. You do a writing assignment.
  • 2nd Time – Zero points for the day. Teacher calls home. You do a research assignment.
  • 3rd Time – Zero points for the day. You get a referral and are sent to Mr. Nelson’s office.

Medical Excuses/ Absences:

  • You must present a note to the teacher at the beginning of class.
  • A parent/guardian may excuse a student for a total of two PE classes.
  • If you need to be excused for more than two days, you must have a doctor’s note.
  • If you miss a fitness testing day, youmust make it up during Panther Time.
  • If you are absent or excused from PE, you must fill out a PE Absence Form and return it to your teacher within 10 days of your absence. You can find the form on my website.

*If a student on an MVMS teamdoes not participate in PE at an acceptable level of effort, have a positive attitude in class or participate in an all activities, that student will beineligible for practice or a game that afternoon.

Of cCourse, due to the nature of the activities, physical education has some inherent risks. Minor, and even serious injury, can occur from participation. These risks are greatly reduced if you always use common sense, are always safety conscious, and always follow the rules of the activities.

I have reviewed and understand the rules and grading policy for Ms. Petrini’s PE class. I also understand that breaking a rule listed on any of these pages may result in disciplinary action and/or loss of credit for that day’s class.
