COURSE OVERVIEW

Dance 1-8 is designed to promote and enhance student awareness and appreciation of dance as a performing art. Students will develop a personal, physical, kinesthetic, social, and historical understanding about dance. Students will use intellect, artistic expression, and technique in order to produce and reproduce various styles of dance.

CLASS CONTENT

  • Warm-up, Center, Across the Floor, Cool Down

The students will learn basic through advanced levels of proper class etiquette and movement for Ballet, Jazz and Contemporary.

  • Choreography

Students will learn choreography for class projects and school performances.

  • Student Choreography and Lessons
  • Vocabulary and Class Projects

Verbal and written tests will be given, along with quarterly projects.

  • Performance

Classroom and stage performances will happen quarterly (dates TBD)

*The students are required to have a black dance leotard, tights, dance pants/shorts, pink ballet shoes and black jazz shoes.

*Students will be required to see a live performance and write a review of that performance. This performance can be an in-school event, such as a theatre production, chorus or band concert, or show choir show. Or students can elect to see something at another school or in Mobile at a theater such as, Playhouse in the Park, Chickasaw Civic Theater, Joe Jefferson Playhouse, The University of South Alabama, or Mobile Theater Guild, just to name a few.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND POLICIES

  1. Be on time to class
  2. Wear the required items (information on back)
  3. Hair MUST be up. No necklaces, bracelets or dangling earrings. No gum.
  4. Keep the dance space, bathrooms and lockers neat and clean.
  5. Provide a written note for all absences. You have three days to bring a note.
  6. The class will be finished by applauding for yourself, and others, as well as the teacher.
  7. Be positive about your learning experience and encourage other classmates when they are struggling
  8. A $25.00 class fee per semester is collected.

GRADING CRITERIA

Performance Based: 60%

This includes dressing out daily, participation in class, participation in informal and formal performances, classroom etiquette, and technical improvements

Vocabulary Tests/Projects/Homework/Binder: 40%
