English 9 & 9A – Waterhouse
It is important to determine from Day One to do your best; I am confident that you will enjoy the feeling of success that comes with your best effort. What happens this year will begin your high school career. I look forward to getting to know you, to working and laughing together, to learning with you, and maybe teaching you a thing or two this year.
The materials and supplies that you will need in order to be prepared for class are:
- A 1 ½” – 2” three-ring binder with five dividers.
- This will be checked as part of your homework grade for neatness, organization, and completeness periodically.
- Loose leaf paper.
- Pens (blue or black ink only) and pencils.
- 1 package of erasers.
- 3 different color highlighters.
- A pencil bag that snaps into the binder to help with organization.
- A package of 3X5 and 4X6 index cards for vocabulary flashcards and the research project.
- 1 marble composition book for your journal.
- 2 two-pocket folders.
- A flash drive.
- Something for writing down and organizing your assignments.
Homework:
It is essential for your success that you develop good habits early. Homework counts as part of your grade, even though it is a small part numerically. The discipline of doing the work and the practice that it provides is “priceless.” Reading is homework, and studying for quizzes is homework. If you do not make the time and devote yourself to completing all assignments, including reading and studying, you will not find yourself successful in this class.
Your grade for the year will be based on the following:
1. Preparation and participation 5%
2. Homework 15%
3. Journal 15%
4. Quizzes 25%
5. Tests and essays 40%
6. Projects (the grade percentage will be based on size of project)
I look forward to an exciting ninth grade year together.
Mrs. Waterhouse
