classroom procedures

All students are expected to be familiar with the FHS Student Handbook. I will enforce handbook policies in all classes. Please refer to the Student Handbook for these guidelines. Please take care of restroom and office business before coming into class.

Entering & Beginning Class:

-Come into my classroom with all of your supplies – writing utensils, binder, spiral, reading material, work to turn-in, etc. Time is important, being unprepared wastes time.

-Arrive with a positive attitude!! You can count on me to be as positive I can, so be as positive as you can be in return.

-I love conversation and social time, so please feel free to chat with whomever, but when the bell rings, please be seated and engaged in the warm-up activity.

-Cell Phones:“These devices must remain turned off during the instructional day, including during all testing, unless they are being used for approved instructional purposes” (Handbook 51). Please have your cell phone put away in a place where it will not cause a distraction. I will not take up your cell phone unless it is taking away from instruction time by being a distraction to you or classmates around you.

-The majority of days you will begin class with a “Thought Question”. Please begin working on the Thought Question in your composition notebook as soon as possible. I also reserve the right to grade your warm-up activities at any time.

Cooperative Groups:

-I believe kids learn better in groups rather than rows. Cooperative groups are a great tool I use in my classroom, but they do come with expectations…

-Expectations are: students will be on task, students’ effort will carry equal weight, students will always be respectful of opinions and ideas of other group members, and students will demonstrate appropriate attitudes and behaviors at all times. Together we make this classroom a safe learning environment.

The Reading Corner & The Writing Center

-The Reading Corner is not finished but will still be able to be enjoyed.

-The purpose of this corner is for students to have the chance to explore and enjoy literature, as well as relax. All reading material is open for my students to read. I encourage each of you to dive in and find ONE novel, outside of the required class readings, that interests you this year. You won’t regret it!

-Seating capacity is as follows:

  • Big Comfy Chair: 1 students
  • White Table & Chairs: 2 students
  • Purple Pillow: 1 student
  • Blue Bean Bag: 1 student
  • Total Seating Capacity: 5 students

-The Reading Corner will be used when students are completely finished with mandatory class work.

-Students must ask permission from me to sit in The Reading Corner.

-Behavior will be appropriate and respectful, or this privilege will be taken away.

-The Writing Centerwill be used as a “focus” area for all students. I like to think of it as an area of the classroom that is used to complete work independently or is used to receive extra help when needed.

-At any time during the class period or Activity Period where a student needs to re-focus, The Writing Center is the area to do this. Just ask permission first ?.

Leaving Class & Absences:

-Generally, bathroom breaks take away from the efficiency of our 90-minute class period; however, being that it is 90 minutes long, reasonable bathroom breaks are allowed…realistically, everyone does have to use the restroom at some point.

-Please do not pack up in anticipation of the bell ringing; please continue working and only pack-up when you are dismissed.

-When you are absent, or you miss any class time, expect that you “missed something”.

-Do not ask if you “missed anything”, because you probably did. Instead, refer to the ”While You Were Out” bulletin board:

  • Look at the board
  • Find your name
  • Take the work with your name on it off the board.
  • Complete the work, or ask for help and then complete the work, turn-in the work.

Refer to “Grading Policies” for more information regarding make-up work.

Grading Policy

Grading Scale:

Summative Assessments = 40%

Formative Assessments = 60%

Make-Up Work:

-For every school day absent, a student has TWO CLASS DAYS to complete missed assignments.

-If a student is absent on the day of an assessment, the student will make-up the missed assessment during Activity Period. In addition, the student will complete steps for remediation at the discretion of the teacher prior to making-up the missed assessment.

-Students should make every effort to gather and complete work prior to a school sponsored absence; however, time allowed for make-up due to a school sponsored activity is the same with make-up work for all absences.

-Make-up work will be pinned to the “While You Were Out” bulletin board. Refer to “Leaving Class & Absences”.

Late-Work:

-I will assign a due date for all assignments. Your expectations as a student are to have assignment/s completed and turned in on the set due date.

-A five(5) day grace period will be given starting the day after the original assignment due date. During this grace period, students can initiate remediation and receive full credit for the assignment/s. The work will then be due on the fifth day from the original due date.

-Work submitted after the fifth day of the five(5) day grace period will receive no higherthan partial credit at the teacher’s discretion. At this time, the student forfeits the right to “re-do’s” or remediation.

-Late-work and re-do’s WILL NOT be accepted the last week of the six weeks. No exceptions.

Re-do’s:

-Students will be given three(3) calendar days to initiate the remediation process with me in order to “re-do” any assignment or test and receive full credit. Note: I reserve the right to administer the assignment or test re-do in a different format than the original form.

-Students are required to complete all intervention at the teacher’s discretion before the assignment/test will be re-done. Remediation will occur during Activity Period.

-The “re-doing” of assignments/tests will ONLY be completed during the Activity Period.

-In order to initiate assignment/test remediation, a student MUST fill out and turn in a “Request for Remediation” form. Students can ask me for this form, and they can turn this form back into me within the three(3) day remediation initiation grace period.
