Mrs. Lawson’s Kindergarten Rm. 143

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Kindergarten at Somerset Academy Lone Mountain. I’m looking forward to a productive and fun year! I will be working together with you and your child to make this the best year possible. Here are a few things to get us started.

This blue folder will be your child’s take home folder. It needs to come back to school each day and will be sent home each day. Please put any notes for me in the folder and remind your child to put the notes, or anything else they need to give me, in the black basket on my desk when they come into the classroom.

HOMEWORK: In an effort to preserve family time and support the growth of the whole child we will not be sending home homework on a daily or weekly basis. We would love for you to use this time to play a game, read together, go outside and play, or maybe even let your child help you cook dinner. J We will, from time to time, be sending home some projects to complete that your child can then bring back to school and share with the class. J

COMMUNICATION: I will send out emails as my main way of communication. I will also be posting a newsletter on my class website at the beginning of each month to let you know what we’ve been learning and what’s coming up. You will also be receiving SchoolWay app. messages and using OnVolunteer to sign up for volunteer and donation opportunities. You will need to sign up for both of these and more info. will be sent out soon about my school website. Another great source for general school info. can be found on our school website: http://somersetlonemountain.org/

SNACKS: Please send a snack to school with your child every day that is quick to eat and easy for your child to clean up themselves. They’ll have about 5 min. to eat it in the afternoon. Examples of quick and not too messy snacks are: grapes, chewy granola bars, gummy snacks, etc… Please do not send in fruit cups (a teacher’s worst nightmare-ha ha), Gogurts or ‘meals’ for snack. They need to be able to open it themselves and clean up after themselves. If your child forgets to bring a snack I’ll have a backup supply (I will ask for donations through OnVolunteer soon) that I can give them. If your child has specific allergies you can send in some appropriate snacks for them and I will put them aside with their name on it in case of a rushed morning and forgotten snacks or in case birthday treats are handed out with an ingredient your child can not have.

ALLERGIES: If your child has allergies of any kind, or specific health issues you would like for me to be aware of, please make sure that information is on the health form you filled out so the nurse can give me the information. You may email me the info. as well, but please make sure the health office is also informed.

FRAGRANCES: Due to my sensitivity to fragrances, as well as any other students with sensitivities or asthma, please refrain from sending in hand sanitizer w/fragrance (Purell is fine), white board markers that aren’t low-odor, lotions w/fragrance, Clorox wipes, baby wipes w/fragrance, etc. Thank you!

VOLUNTEERS: I will be sending out more information about volunteering after we’ve all settled in to our school routines.

ABSENCES AND TARDIES: If your child is absent please email me and also so she can excuse the absence. If your child is planning on missing school, please send a note or e-mail me in advance to create a pre-arranged absence.

BEHAVIOR: I will be working with each of your children as individuals to guide them in learning appropriate behaviors that are fair and keep our environment safe. I will not be using a chart or reward system. They will, of course, have rules as well as consequences using the Love and Logic philosophy. If a student is having extraordinary difficulty making good choices we can work together to come up with a plan that will meet the student’s needs.

RESTROOM POLICY: Since we have a restroom in our classroom, if a child needs to use the restroom they may do so at any time. Please dress your child in clothing they can easily pull down by themselves. This includes belts & girls tights. There have been cases where kids have made it to the restroom only to have an accident because they cannot operate all of their new, cool, school clothes! J

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS: You may send in a small snack to celebrate your child’s birthday and we can share it during afternoon snack time (please send in individual portions and napkins please J ) or you could bring it in and share it in the lunchroom during lunch if you’d like. I would need to put you on the visitor’s calendar if you’re coming in so please let me know ahead of time if you’d like to bring something in at lunch.

EXTRA CLOTHES: We’re asking that each stu. has an extra set of clothes in their backpack in case of accidents.

SPECIALS: Mon. and Wed. will be P.E., Tues./Spanish, Thurs./Music, and Fri./Art

We have a lot of new programs and procedures this year so please bear with me while I get them all up and running. J If you have any questions I can be reached through email at:

I look forward to an exciting year filled with many firsts and lots of successes for your child!

Thank you,

Mrs. Lawson
