30 Ways to Practice Your Spelling Words

*Complete a minimum of 3 different types of spelling practices each week. Each practice is worth 2 points if words are spelled correctly. Tuesday and Wednesday nights you choose from the list below, but on Thursday everyone will choose #30 *See page 2 below for this Unit’s words

  1. Alphabetize the words
  2. Divide each word into syllables (do not guess – use a dictionary)
  3. Write the words and circle all the vowels
  4. Write the words and circle all the consonants
  5. Write the words and cross out the silent letters
  6. Write the words neatly in pen
  7. Make a set of flash cards for each word
  8. Write the definition for each word
  9. Write a sentence for each word
  10. Write a synonym for each word
  11. Add prefixes and/or suffixes to each word
  12. Classify all the words into categories
  13. Classify the words according to parts of speech
  14. Write a poem using all the words
  15. Use the words in similes
  16. Type your spelling words
  17. Write your spelling words in cursive using pen
  18. Cut out letters from magazines or newspapers to make your spelling words
  19. Scramble the spelling words after you write them
  20. Make a word search (use graph paper or Armored Penguin on Mrs. Kane’s website)
  21. Solve a word search (This can only happen if you are given a word search on Wednesday)
  22. Make a crossword (use graph paper or Armored Penguin on Mrs. Kane’s website)
  23. Solve a crossword (This can only happen if you are given a crossword on Wednesday)
  24. Write a story using ALL the words
  25. Write the words in code for a friend to solve
  26. Solve a friend’s code words (This can only happen on Wednesday)
  27. Write couplets (He was fast In the past)
  28. Draw a picture and hide all of the words in the picture
  29. Write a news story using all the words
  30. Have an adult give you a pretest on Thursday (Signature of adult required)

Monday – rewrite the words under the correct root

Tuesday – Choose an activity on the Spelling Contract (Electronic practice must be done on Tue)

Wednesday – Free choice activity on the Spelling Contract (Solve a friend’s electronic practice)

Thursday – Parent or adult gives a pretest and signs the pretest so that Mrs. Kane knows parent sees how student is doing *Friday all 4 practice are due
