Mrs. Houchens’ Kitchen and Classroom Procedures

ARRIVAL TO CLASS

Ø  Be in your assigned seat when the bell rings.

Ø  Class begins promptly each day with bellwork.

EATING and DRINKING IS PERMITTED IN CLASS

Ø  This PRIVILEGE will be taken away unless you clean up after yourself…

ASSIGNMENTS

Ø  It is essential to your academic success to complete all assignments.

Ø  DO NOT THROW ANYTHING AWAY!

Ø  Every assignment must be turned in with your name and date and be placed in the appropriate basket.

Ø  Assignments turned in without a name will be thrown away. If you wish to replace this assignment, you can re-do the work for a late grade.

Ø  Assignments are only made up according to excused absence or school trip

Unexcused absence = no makeup work.

Ø  It is your responsibility to find out the assignment and turn it in within the time limit (find a homework partner to help you).

Ø  Assignments to be graded should be placed in the appropriate class basket.

Ø  Homework assignments will be told you aloud or by writing them on the board.

Ø  Out of the room unless YOUR personal agenda book is signed

BE PREPARED

Ø  Bring your notebook/folder (with your assignments), paper, pen/pencil, agenda book, and a good attitude to class every day. Your folder grade, doing assignments, studying for tests, and being prepared for class will improve your grade…if all that doesn’t work, see me!

Ø  If you lose a paper, there you will need to get a copy from my extras box and take it to the library to make a copy for yourself ($.05 per page charge in library).

Ø  Field trips and club meetings – plan ahead by getting your assignments or make arrangements with the teacher to get what you missed – you are responsible for all assignments as if you were here!

MANNERS

Ø  Do not speak out of turn – you do not have to raise your hand, but you should be cautious of when you speak as to not dominate the classroom or interrupt someone else.

Ø  Side conversations are not allowed unless given permission by the teacher.

Ø  Respect the teacher, as well as everyone around you.

Ø  If a visitor enters the room or if I receive a phone call from a parent or from the office, you should remain on task and quiet.

Ø  HALL PASS

Ø  You can use YOUR agenda book as much as you want until your run out of spaces…Once there are not spaces, you will need to complete a discipline form to leave the classroom and carry that with you as an agenda book. Please return discipline slip to teacher as you re-enter the room.

Ø  When leaving the classroom, do so quietly, not disturbing anyone else.

Ø  You must ask permission (done by completing agenda with a pencil) and have your agenda book signed IN PEN YOU HAVE PROVIDED before you leave. Please understand that not all requests may be approved, even if you have a valid hall pass.

Ø  You will not be allowed to leave the room without your agenda book/hall pass.

Ø  If you attempt to use another student’s agenda book, you will receive a warning and then a referral to your assistant principal.

Ø  Make all restroom visits and phone calls between classes.

CHEATING

Ø  Zero tolerance. WHEN caught, an automatic zero! This includes copying, pasting, using other people’s work or working in pairs when group work has not been designated.

CELL PHONES

Ø  Cell phones should be put up and never taken out for any reason during class.

Ø  If I see or hear a cell phone, I will follow school procedures and take it and turn it in to the office. NO Exceptions!!!!

END OF CLASS

Ø  You must remain seated or in assigned area until the bell rings. I dismiss class-not the BELL!

Ø  When leaving make sure your workstation is straightened up and your chair is push up under the table (unless you are in last block – then place chairs on top of tables). Place all trash in the trash can.

ABSENCES (Follow School Policy)

Ø  The best way to learn is to be here! It is your responsibility to find out what you missed. Ask a classmate or ask me before or after class.

Ø  Tardies – Tardies disrupt teaching and learning! I will not tolerate! Tardies will be written up and reported to the office! YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR WRITING YOURSELF UP FOR TARDIES>IF YOU FAIL TO DO SO, I WILL WRITE UP THE TARDY AND SURPASSING CLASSROOM DISCIPLINE.

GRADING

Ø  General Grading (Straight-point System) – See syllabus

Ø  Test and open response will be given at the end of each unit…On the day before the test, your notebook will be due

Ø  Organization is important to be successful in college and in the world of work. It will also help you to succeed in this class.

FAMILY, CAREER, AND COMMUNITY LEADERS OF AMERICA

Ø  FCCLA is a co-curricular organization for students enrolled in a Family and Consumer Sciences course or have been enrolled.

Ø  Class time will be allowed for FCCLA activities and FCCLS Projects may substitute for grades on class assignments as approved by the teacher.

Ø  FCCLA is a wonderful organization and I strongly encourage you take advantage of the opportunities that FCCLA has to offer each of you.

Classroom Procedures

1.  You should be in your seat working on bellwork when the bell rings. Tardy slips should be completed immediately.

2.  Refer to the board for “bell work”. This could be in the form of an essential question, a burning question, or some other type of assignment. Begin work immediately on the exercise on the board unless told otherwise. Any questions can wait until attendance has been posted for the day.

3.  Books are not to be removed from this room unless permission has been given by the teacher.

4.  Do not operate machines unless you have received instruction from the instructor on how to use it.

5.  Do not move anything not belonging to you. This includes items belong to the teacher, as well as items belonging to students.

6.  No students may be in the room unattended and should not be in my classroom during breaks unless given permission.

7.  If you need to get something or leave your seat, do so at an appropriate time.

8.  Students may not use the Internet without permission during class time unless it is for part of an assignment or has been given permission by teacher. If working on the computer, you should print to the library or computer lab. Students may not modify any settings on the computer or download games or music. This includes printer settings, screensavers, desktop wallpaper, and desktop icons.

9.  Student should demonstrate respect at all times…To show respect the student should not talk or make noise when the teacher, guest, or other student is talking with permission. Students are not to laugh at, criticize, or attempt to humiliate other students, guests, or teachers.

10.  The teacher is in charge of the classroom at all times. Students are welcomed to express opinions, participate in discussion, and otherwise be fully a part of this class. However, when personal classroom issues are at hand, the student should plan to meet with the teacher privately instead of express opinions or concerns to the entire class.

11.  Students are encouraged to participate in all class activities, group work, and other classroom events. Appropriate and relevant comments are welcomed and encouraged but you should be acknowledged before speaking…We will be using Wait Time for questions and discussions, so hand raising is not necessary unless you need to address the class out of turn.

12.  When the teacher makes an assignment, the students should immediately begin working on that assignment. Unless working on a group assignment, the students should remain quiet since talking or other noises could be distracting for other students.

13.  The students should keep his/her hands, feet, etc. to him/herself and maintain that same respect with his/her property. Maintain respect for other people’s property, including the school property.

14.  The student is not to ask the teacher for materials during class or to disrupt class by asking other students for materials.

15.  Students are not allowed to use obscene words or gestures.

16.  Students shall at no time sit with their heads on their desks or appear to be sleeping.

17.  Students should be giving full attention to the subject matter. Class time is reserved for class, not applying make-up, grooming, completing other work, or any other personal habits.

18.  Students should demonstrate the same respect and courtesy toward any substitute teacher or guest in the classroom. A student may expect a more severe punishment if the student disrespects a substitute or guest.

19.  Students will practice proper safety and sanitation procedures in all areas of the classroom.

20.  The student is to conform to all the expectations in the student handbook.

Consequences for breaking this contract include, but are not limited to, the following:

1.  Warning by teacher

2.  Student teacher conference

3.  Contact of student’s guardian

4.  Discipline slip turned into the principal.
