Welcome Back to School!

Mrs. Erdelac’s Classroom Information and Procedures

Welcome parents and students to Back to School Night 2013! I'm so excited to meet you and your child and to welcome you into our classroom! I have lots of information to share with you, which will hopefully get us all off to a great start and keep us moving in the right direction.

Procedures, Procedures, Procedures!

Together, our class will decide what our procedures should be in order to have an orderly and peaceful learning environment. We will post our procedures throughout the classroom to be a visible reminder of what is expected regarding behavior and responsibility. We continue to model and practice them each day.

Homework

Our Math curriculum this year will be Everyday Mathematics. If your child attended first grade at Joan Martin, they will be quite familiar with this program. As I teach a lesson, students will be working in their Math Journal (which stays at school) along with my help. Then they will take home their Math Home Links as homework for an opportunity to practice the newly taught skill. Students should then bring their Home Links back to school the following morning.

Twenty minutes of Reading daily is required Monday through Thursday (this will gradually be increased to twenty-five minutes and then thirty minutes as the year progresses). A reading log will be completed by your child and signed by you each day. The reading log will be turned in each Friday for me to check and a new log will be passed out the following Monday. Students will shop each week for new "just right" books according to our Book Shopping Schedule. They are required to keep their books in a book baggie, to protect them. They should be coming home with their book baggie Monday through Thursday.

We have adopted a new Reading and Spelling program this year called Journeys. Additional information will be coming home soon regarding how we will proceed with Spelling.

Behavior Plan

All students are expected to follow our school and classroom procedures each and everyday. The guiding principles for our procedures are the Life Skills and Lifelong Guidelines. We model and practice these throughout each day. If your child chooses to not follow procedures, and after a warning is given, he/she will move their clothespin down on our clip chart(see handout).Homework not completed and turned in will also result in clipping down on our clip chart as well as a missed lunch recess. You will know each day how your child did regarding behavior/homework by checking his/her planner. We will be working very hard in 2nd grade this year to use self-control regarding using good manners, showing respect, and thinking before we act and speak. It will help your child immensely if you are modeling and practicing these same skills at home. Your support in this area is greatly appreciated!

Volunteer Forms

If you are interested in volunteering to be a room parent, help out at parties (Halloween, Christmas, Valentines Day), chaperone a field trip, or help in any way in our classroom, you are required to have a backgroundcheckon file. This should have been taken care of when you registered your child. If you have not done so, please contact the main office.
