Data Notebook/Leader in Me

As you read in the note sent home in student’s blue folders, our school is working on Leader in Me. We will be focusing on the habit, Be Proactive for the next few weeks. Our class will talk about being responsible, taking initiative, and choosing our own actions. We will be doing different activities in the class that help us learn this habit. Students are also responsible for a data notebook in the classroom. Students are tracking their attendance, homework, behavior and academic goals. We will be setting SMART goals to track.

MCLASS

I will begin student’s MClass testing this week, which involves Dibels (reading fluency) and the TRC component (Reading and comprehending a story as well as writing) As soon as I finish in the next few weeks, I will send home a report.

BOG

Students will take the BOG (Beginning of Grade) test on September 13. This test is third grade material and will be used as a growth tool at the end of the school year after the EOG. Please encourage students to try their best. We will work on how to bubble an answer sheet and learn test taking strategies this week. Please make sure your child is at school and on time this day.

Homework

Please be sure to sign student’s assignment book each night so I know that students read and completed their homework. We started our reading log last week and we will add math and spelling in this week.

What are we learning in the classroom?

Reading-We are learning our class routines for the different stations of Daily 5. Students are working on increasing their reading stamina each day in our Read to Self station. We will also be focusing on going back in the text to find evidence and analyzing characters in the next few weeks.

Math-Students have been completing a daily word problem each day for morning work as well as a math minute for review. For the first few weeks I will not take a grade on the daily word problem. We will be discussing how to answer word problems and strategies we can do to understand the problem. We will also begin our multiplication unit! Students were very excited the first day of learning about equal groups. I will be sending home a sheet in the next week or so that will give different strategies that we use to multiply.

Writing-We have started learning our lower case letters in cursive. Students have been very interested in learning the letters. We have also started a word wall in our writing folder to refer to when unsure of a word. We will begin our personal narrative this week by completing a flow map for our planning stage.

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend!!! It was nice to regroup and get refreshed after a busy first week. Thank you so much to everyone for returning all the paperwork so quickly. I know this takes a lot of time to complete. Thank you for “bearing” with me as we all learn homework routines etc. As always, if you have any questions, please let me know via student’s blue folder, email (), or a phone call. We had a very busy first week in our class. We reviewed school expectations, our class routines and procedures. Students “applied” for class jobs and are off to becoming leaders in our classroom and in the school.

Please sign and return this newsletter to school. I will check and then place on the keep at home side of the blue folderso you will have all the information in this newsletter.
