GRATEFUL TO YOU:Thanks to all of the members of our school community who made Halloween very special for our boys and girls by coming out for the parade, providing party refreshments, playing games and everything in between. A grand time was had by all!

FALL BACK TIME: On the first Sunday of November, daylight savings time ends and clocks revert back one hour to standard time. While it’s a great opportunity to catch up on some extra sleep, please set your clocks so that students arrive for school on time

GATORS GET MOVING: There are still a few remaining slots in the 4/5 group so we have extended the deadline to next Wednesday November 8! Please complete the attached flyer and return it to the home room teacherif your son or daughter would like to participate in this recess activity.

‘FALL 2017 SOCIAL SERVICES SCHOOL PROJECTS

CARE PACKAGES:Greenwood’s Grade 5 Student Ambassadors, in keeping with our Kindness theme, will be sponsoring the school wide drive to collect personal items for donation to the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless. These items will be given to people as they move out of the homeless shelters and out on their own. We will be collecting items starting November 1 through November 17. We will be collecting the following items: toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner, bars of soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and deodorant. Please make sure all items are full sized and new. We thank you for your support in helping those in need in our community!
TROPHY RECYCLING: There will be collection boxes inside the main entrance where community members can place soccer trophies (only) for donation and reuse atDC Scores, a nonprofit that "creates neighborhood [soccer] teams that give kids in need the confidence and skills to succeed on the playing field, in the classroom, and in life."The organization reuses these trophies, so it really is a great opportunity for families to support a local program and clear out some clutter at the same time. The trophycollection will end November 17th this year.

It's time again for the Scholastic Book Fair!The Wild West Book Fair runsfrom November 6 - 10 with Setup on November 3. We can't make it happen without your help! Cashiers, floor runners, and set-up & take-down volunteers are needed.Evening Hours are Wednesday night during other school events-- that isone ofour busiest times so consider lending a hand. Can't wait to see you there!

Fall Parent/Teacher Conferences are just around the Corner!

If you have not already done so, please contact your child’s teacher to arrange for yours. To assist you with your planning, please review the checklist of items that should be covered at the conference(it is archived on our website). Keep in mind too that if your child is taught by multiple teachers and you have questions for them you should email them individually or let the home room teacher know in advance.

GUIDES TO MEASURES SUPPORTING EVIDENCE OF LEARNING FRAMEWORK: Guides to Measures Supporting the Evidence of Learning Framework for parents/guardians are now available. There are three versions of the document: for Parents/guardians of students in Kindergarten to Grade 2, and for Parents/guardians of students in Grade 3 to Grade 5 and one for Parents/guardians of students in Middle School. These guides are provided as a resource to help parents/guardians understand the Evidence of Learning Framework and how readiness and successful transition are used as indicators of each student’s performance as he or she advances through the instructional levels. •Printed guides are provided to you in English and Spanish. Versions in Amharic, Chinese, French, Korean, and Vietnamese are available on the Montgomery County Public Schools web site at

Nov. 9:Flu Clinics -Sign Up for the 2017 Influenza (Flu) Vaccine Clinics

Flu season is upon us. There are simple steps you and your child can take to stay healthy and help prevent the flu. That includes getting a yearly flu vaccine. The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) will conduct free, injectable flu vaccine clinics on November 9, 2017, for children ages 3 to 18 at three MCPS high schools. The clinics will be held at John F. Kennedy, Northwest, and Rockville high schools from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. All clinics are free; however, registration is required due to limited vaccine supplies. Nov. 10: Second Marking Period Begins

Nov. 13: Mental Health Fair Set:As part of School Psychology Awareness Week (November 13‒17), the Montgomery County School Psychologists’ Association is presenting the first School Psychologist Mental Health Fair on Monday, November 13. Students and families are invited to participate as school psychologists from MCPS share skills and information on a variety of topics, including yoga and mindfulness, early childhood development, sleep hygiene, pet therapy, and coping skills. The event will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on November 13 in the Carver Educational Services Center Auditorium, 850 Hungerford Drive in Rockville. A blurb is provided below.

Operating Budget and CIP

Superintendent Recommends $1.818 Billion School Construction Plan

Superintendent Jack Smith is recommending a $1.818 billion six-year school construction plan for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) to address enrollment growth and aging infrastructure. The plan includes 30 capacity projects to address space deficits system wide, including several new schools and schools addition projects. Read the superintendent’s recommended FY 2019-2024 Capital Improvements Program. Provide comment at the Capital Improvements Program hearings.

Setting the 2018–2019 MCPS School Calendar

It’s that time of year again when the district develops the school calendar for the following school year. Since last year, school districts across Maryland have been discussing how best to design their school calendars given the new time constraints placed on the length of the school year. The current 2017–2018 school year is the first school year operating under these new rules, which are that school cannot start before Labor Day and must end before June15.

MCPS has been meeting with focus groups of parents, staff, and other stakeholder groups and is seeking your feedback on how best to design the 2018–2019 school calendar. Next year, the district will have even fewer days to work with than in years past to accommodate instructional and non-instructional traditions.
