Library News Second Trimester

Kindergarten and First Grade: The children continued to learn about the parts of books. They are knowing them quickly and accurately. During class, books on science, nature, Martin Luther King Jr. and riddles and rhymes were read to the students. We also read Valentine’s Day books and popular Dr. Suess books in honor of his birthday. Cynthia Rylant, Jan Brett, and Steven Kellogg were some authors shared this trimester. The children also listened to stories ona flannelboard. They continue to shine each week with their library skills!

Second Grade: The students continued to amaze me with their analysis and critical thinking about stories that are shared in class. They understand and know the parts of books and are being introduced to how books are organized in the library. The students learned about Snowflake Bentley (first photographer of snowflakes) and Robert Munsch. We explored Robert Munsch’s website and emailed him a note. Guess what? Both classes received a message back. They were thrilled! We also explored stories that we know (ex: The Three Little Pigs), and how authors can take a story and change it to make their own. It has been exciting to see the student’s explore the library to find books that capture their interest.

Third and Fourth Grade: Students learned about the organization of fiction, nonfiction, and skills to locate books independently in any library. They learned that Melville Dewey created the Dewey Decimal System which catalogs all books into only 10 sections. In third grade they listened to the story, What Do You Do With an Idea? They used what they learned for the story to express their ideas on certain topics. In fourth grade, they wrote about their favorite authors and what they enjoyed about their books. The students are also exploring the different genres in the library and learning how to identify them. Destiny Quest continues to be a favorite site for students as they check which top 10 books are checked out in the library each week.

Fifth Grade: The students reviewed the organization of fiction and nonfiction books. They completed assignments about Martin Luther King Jr., after hearing stories and videos on his life. They learned how words have power and how they can be used in a positive way. The students also learned about the inventor of the super-soaker in the nonfiction book, Whoosh! They had to come up with an invention that would help the world. They did a great job with this. The students have a good understanding of the Webpath Express and how to locate websites to help them with research subjects and appropriate grade level.

Sixth Grade: The students learned about internet safety, copyright, fair use law, and plagiarism. They completed an assignment on Martin Luther King Jr., after listening to a story on Segregation. They focused on the traits that MLK had and how it made an impact in the world at that time. They also learned about the Little Rock Nine. The students worked on identifying book genres and finding books of interest to help with book reports in class. They also read with the second grade classes to help them improve on oral expression and voice level when reading reports out loud. The sixth graders have reviewed concepts that they have learning over the last few years at St. Louise—research skills, references, location of books, etc as they move closer to their junior high years.

GUEST AUTHOR VISIT:Students in grades Kindergarten through 6th will be meeting guest author, Simon Calcavecchia on Wednesday, April 19th. Simon is a local author and motivational speaker. He has written the picture book, The Adventures ofFrank and Mustard. Simon visits schools to share his journey about becoming an author and how one event changed his life forever. The St. Louise Library is thrilled to have him visit! Thank you to the Parent’s Club for funding this guest author visit through their enrichment grants program (which is made possible due to funds raised by the Walk-A-Thon).

“In 2002, I broke my neck during a rugby game in Australia. The transition from my injury changed my life forever. However, it has allowed me to grow in ways I never imagined.

In the last decade, I have spent a tremendous amount of time working with kids. It is a passion of mine that has led me to publishing my first children’s book. With it, I want to share my experience with quadriplegia.”
