Job Purpose: Accountable to the Senior Programme Manager within the applications and funding team, to ensure smooth delivery of the programme’s research application process and funding boards forone or more of the programmeshosted by the centre. These are:
  • MRC/NIHR Efficacy and Mechanism Evaluation (EME) programme
  • NIHR Health Technology Assessment (HTA) programme
  • NIHR Public Health Research (PHR) programme
  • NIHR Health Services and Delivery Research (HS&DR) programme
  • NISCHR Research for Patient and Public Benefit (RfPPB) programme
  • NISCHR Health Research Awards

Primary Responsibilities/Activities (specific tasks will be set through personal objectives): / % Time
Research Management – operational functions
To be responsible for the smooth running of the programme’s research application process:
  • Ensuring clear communication with applicants about funding opportunities through close working with the Communications team;
  • Overseeing the correct set up of funding calls in the Management Information System.
  • Supporting complex applicant queries arising during calls for research.
To be responsible for the timely and efficient delivery of the programme’sfunding boards. This will include oversight of:
Successful delivery of external board meetingsusing the organisation’s bespoke Management Information System, ensuring all Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions are adhered to;
Achievement of all programme metrics relating to board delivery and external review;
Regular review of application and board processes to continually identify improvements and efficiencies ;
Management of board members and membership including co-ordination with central team responsible for advertising board membership opportunities;
Ensuring all funding board outcomes are accurately communicated to applicants and stakeholders;
Research management – scientific functions
Preparation of detailed analysis and review of research proposals received, including review of costings and Intellectual Property. Working closely with applicants to ensure their proposals are ready for review by the board. Providing short summary documents to board members;
Scientific content contribution to the successful engagement of sufficient number of peer reviewers for all research proposals.
Providing scientific support for applicants through responses to remit enquiries and clarifying board feedback points. / 10%

Analysis and Reporting
Regular review of complex system-generated reports to check data accuracy in relation to the work area;
Actively contribute to the timely production, interpretation and dissemination of management information and statistics for the work area;
Put forward recommendations for service improvement through the provision of advice, briefings, written reports and/or presentations.
Responsibility for monitoring and maintaining records/reports to meet both Directorate funder requirements. / 15%

  • To lead on a number of small to medium-sized projects, assessing requirements, setting timelines for delivery, and working with others to successfully deliver these.

Line management and team leadership
  • The post holder will be required to delegate administrative duties effectively and provide functional management of Assistant Programme Managers and administrators.
  • Annually supporting the setting of SMART of objectives for staff and overseeing successful achievement of these;
  • Working in a collaborative way with other funding team Programme Managers to ensure even distribution of workload across the team and ensuring clear communication of key timings to all members.

Liaison
  • Building sustained excellent relationships with other members of the programme team including the board Chair, Consultant Advisors and internal colleagues.
  • Work collaboratively with other functional areas of the Research Delivery and Impact Directorate, and acrossNETSCC as appropriate, to achieve the NETSCC organisationaland business objectives.

Internal & External Relationships:
Internal: The post holder will need to work closely with other members of the funding team. They will also need to develop working relationships with programme managers in other parts of the organisation to share experience and learning. The post holder will need to work closely with staff in the central communication and finance teams.
External: Programme Director, Board Chairs, key Department of Health contacts. Other external agencies, stakeholders and partners of NETSCC, as required.
Special Requirements:
There will be a need for occasional overnight stays away from Southampton.
To be prepared to provide cover within other programmes, and to flexibly take on other tasks commensurate with the role.

Programme Manager in the Application and Funding Team

  1. Ensuring clear communication with applicants about funding opportunities through close working with the communications team.
  2. Overseeing the correct set up of funding calls in NETSCC’s bespoke Management Information System.
  3. Working with the wider team to ensure all board preparation and management processes are on track.
  4. Supporting the funding board Chair and Programme Director with any queries they may have relating to programme management or specific applications, or delivering activities requested by them to support delivery of the funding boards.
