Class Syllabus

2016-2017

Course Title:7th Grade World History

Course Description:7th grade world history covers major civilizations starting with the Byzantine Empire (500 A.D.) and ending with the Age of Exploration (1400-1700). We will touch on the major cultures and religions of China, Japan, The Middle East, North and South America and Europe. My goal is for all students to have a working knowledge of world history, while being able to use critical thinking to explain why our topics are relevant to modern society.

Outline of Course
Week: 2-6
Standards Covered: 7.1-7.12
Objectives: Show how the fall of Rome affected major civilization growth and change. Cover the Major Muslim Societies in the Ancient Middle East.
Topics Covered: The Byzantine Empire and Islamic Civilization / Week: 7-12
Standards Covered: 7.13-7.31
Objectives: Cover the Major Civilizations and cultures in Asia.
Topics Covered: African and Asian Civilizations
Week: 13-22
Standards Covered: 7.32-7.42
Objectives: Cover the major civilizations that developed in the Middle Ages. Cover The Crusades and detail how they changed the world culturally.
Topics Covered: Europe in the Middle Ages / Week: 23-30
Standards Covered:7.43-7.75
Objectives: Cover the Renaissance and Reformation in Europe. Cover the cultures in early North and Sout5h America. Cover the age of exploration and its impact on cultures globally.
Topics Covered:Early Americas, Rise of Europe, Age of Exploration
Everything past week 30 will be end of the year review while we prepare for testing.

Assessment Types:

In Class Activities –20% - This section will consist of any work that we do in class or start in class and finish for homework. (Worksheets, Definitions, Group Activities ect…)

9 Weeks Project – 20% - The students will have a major project each 9 weeks. This project may be in the form of a power point, poster presentation, or research paper. They will have 4 total (5%each).

Chapter Tests – 20% - We will have a formal assessment after each chapter (usually every other Friday).

Unit Exam – 20% - We will have a formal assessment after each unit which will usually consist of about 3 chapters.

Mid Term/Final Exam – 10% (each) We will have a comprehensive Mid Term and Final Exam, which will each be worth 10% of the overall grade.

Classroom Rules and Procedures

Rules

  1. Be respectful to everyone in your class. Remarks aimed at belittling classmates or remarks of a sexist, racist or bigoted nature will be met with immediate disciplinary action.
  2. Keep a clean classroom environment. This means sometimes picking things up that you didn’t leave.
  3. Be on time and prepared for class each day. This means having you’re history binder, something to write with, and paper EVERY day.
  4. Whenever ANYONE is speaking to the class there should be complete silence. Students will speak when called on or when given permission as part of a group assignment.
  5. All Hawkins county school rules and guidelines apply in my classroom.

Procedures

  1. Bathroom Passes – All students will be given 5 bathroom passes each 9 week period. These passes will be signed each time the student leaves the room. After the 5 passes are used the student will no longer be allowed to leave the room for restroom purposes. If a student has a medical condition which requires them to use the bathroom frequently please send a doctor’s note to the front office confirming this.
  2. Make-Up Work – All students are responsible for their OWN make up work. The day the student returns from an absence they are required to alert the teacher of their absence and request their missed assignments.
  3. There will be a bell ringer for the students to complete at the start of each day when they enter class. Students should not be walking around, talking or disrupting class in any way.
