2014 Welding Scope

This Contest will be offered at the Provincial and National Levels

Gold and Silver Medal winners from both school boards will advance to the Regional at Niagara College Competition *Qualifying Competitions take place on Saturday, April 12, 2014.

PURPOSE OF THE CHALLENGE:

To test and evaluate the various safety-oriented welding, fitting skills of the Halton District and Halton Catholic District School Board’s youths. Contestants will be assessed in their ability to read blue print, welding symbols interpretation and welds.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE TO BE TESTED:

General shop safety

General safety on arc/ stick and mig welding and safe work habits

Proper selection of arc welding electrodes by their classifications.

Blueprint reading and weld symbols interpretation. (dimensions are given in millimeters)

Transfer of measurements and other information from blueprint to the project

Layout, position and fit components

Welding processes SMAW and GMAW

Cleaning of finished welds

Cleaning of shop at end

Equipment and Materials:

Provided by Committee:

All power sources, Welders, tips, consumables, electrodes, wire. Material will be 44W or A36 plate.

Cold chisel

Minimum Clothing Requirements:

Each Competitor must provide their own clear safety glasses, cutting gogles (minimum #4 lens), welding helmet (#10 lens minimum), gloves, safety shoes and appropriate working clothing suitable for welding and flame cutting.

** Safety Glasses must be worn at all time in work area.**

Registration and Orientation 7:00 – 8:00 a.m. ( required attendance)
  • *NOTE* Latecomers will not be allowed to enter the competition.

BUTANE LIGHTERS are not allowed in the welding area.

Mandatory Job Interview:

To assist competitors in fully preparing for their eventual job searches and to become valued employees, there will be a job interview incorporated into this contest. It is expected that the competitiors arrive prepared with a Resume and Cover letter. Competitor’s performance on the interview will be counted toward final contest standing. Feedback will be provided to the competitors in order to help prepare them for the real-life experience of job interviews.

Practical Test:

Due to limited space and facility, competetor will rotate between various stations on a time limited basis.

1) SMAW: Weld Test and Symbols interpretation

2) GMAW: Weld Test and symbols interpretation.

3) Interview Skills: (Dress Code will not be assessed)

March 6nd, Coach Meeting 4:00 p.m. * Deadline for registration of competitor*

April 4th , 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. Orientation

9:00 Competion to start 11:30 Approx: Lunch4:30 Dinner 6:30 Closing Ceremonies
