COURSE DESCRIPTION
The visual arts program offers students comprehensive art experiences with detailed explorations in the classics such as painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, graphic design, and crafts. In addition to gaining confidence and proficiency working with a variety of mediums, students will learn about the history, analysis, and interpretation of art.
GOALS OF VISUAL ARTS EDUCATION
The major role that arts education has in the middle school curriculum is to build critical thinking skills in students and to foster life-long learning. The goal of art education is to develop, practice and perfect these characteristics through the following fundamental components:
*by making art (art production)
*by responding to and making judgments about the properties and qualities that exist in visual forms (art criticism)
*by acquiring knowledge about the contributions artists and art make to culture and society (art history)
*by understanding the nature, meaning, and value of art (aesthetics).
CLASS GUIDELINES FOR SUCCESS
In addition to the school-wide discipline policy, a set of class guidelines for success and consequences has been established and will be maintained. The following is a list of the class guidelines for success and consequences for art:
Class Guidelines for Success:
1. Be prepared for class – bring sketchbook, pencils, etc. to class everyday.
2. Be to class on time.
3. Listen to and follow directions – ask questions.
4. Respect the people, equipment and furnishings in the art room. Get permission to use other’s materials.
5. Use all tools safely and properly.
6. Be honest and accountable for your actions.
7. Use your time wisely – stay on task and work towards project and assignment objectives.
8. Work quietly – use appropriate language and have appropriate conversations.
9. Be responsible for work area and tools – clean up after yourself!
10. Have a positive attitude.
If you CHOOSE not to follow the guidelines:
Step 1 – teacher and student will discuss the choices or behaviors that are disruptive, inappropriate, or unacceptable
Step 2 – student will be assigned a lunch detention for continued disruptive, inappropriate, or unacceptable choices or behaviors and parents will be informed of the situation and consequences
Step 3 – student will be assigned a detention
Step 4 – student will be referred to the schools administration (Blue Form) for further action
ASSESSMENT
Assessment is the process of judging in terms of criteria. Assessment is an integral part of expected learning outcomes. Criteria are expected outcomes and observable evidence of learning. The main purpose of assessment should be to improve teaching and learning and to measure student’s progress. Evaluation of each student will be by the following methods:
Percentage of Overall Grade: *Progress/Improvement – 40% *Projects – 30% *Behavior/Work ethic – 30%
A+ 99 – 100 C+ 81 – 82 I Incomplete
A 94 – 98 C 76 – 80 O Outstanding
A- 92 – 93 C- 74 – 75 S Satisfactory
B+ 90 – 91 D+ 72 – 73 U Unsatisfactory
B 85 – 89 D 67 – 71 M Medical Excuse
B- 83 – 84 D- 65 – 66 F Below 65 - Failing
MAJOR PROJECTS
6th grade – Nametag, Ceramic Sculpture, Product Packaging Design, Figural Sculpture
7th grade – Nametag, Digital Design (book cover, poster), Paper Sculpture, Ceramic House
8th grade – Logo Design, Ceramic Mug, Art Deco Poster, Grid Self-portrait
DUE DATE & LATE POLICY
When 3-4 students finish the project, a due date is set for each project. The due date is the time all work in class will be stopped. You have two weeks grace period to take it home or come in to class on your own time to finish. After that week you must petition the teacher and explain why you need more time.
DISTRICT WIDE ART SHOW
There will be a district wide art show entitled The Celebration Of The Arts. Exceptional work will be chosen to represent Garnet Valley Middle School. Garnet Valley Middle School displays student artwork on an ongoing basis in display cases and the halls of the school.
