Welcome to AP Calculus BC. I am delighted and honored to have you in my class and appreciate your efforts, achievements, and interests in making it this far in mathematics. This course will be very challenging and fast-paced, yet fun, interesting, and eye-opening. Our goals: to prepare you above and beyond for the AP Calculus BC exam, ready you for a college-level math course, and increase your love for mathematics.

I prefer your work to be done in pencil, especially on assessments. Please have some sort of organizational system, a graphing calculator, as well as your textbook – daily.

Form study groups. It is imperative that you work with others throughout the year – strength in numbers! Working homework problems, studying for tests and quizzes, and preparing for the AP exam will be much easier with a study group.

When the bell rings, you should be in the room and ready to start. On the third tardy (and each additional tardy), you will be assigned a detention. Please be on time! I know most of you are seniors with a lot of obligations – please try your best! And phones – keep them quiet and out of my sight.

For planned absences (including field trips), make arrangements to complete the work before the absence. When you return, you will be on schedule with the rest of the class. If your absence is on a test/quiz day, complete the test/quiz in advance. For unexpected absences, see me before class on the day of your return to determine a schedule for getting caught up. Before/after school make-up tests sessions are available, see the in-class schedule for information.

If you start late, your testing session will not necessarily be extended.

I expect homework to be completed nightly. If you have questions, I expect you to seek out your peers or to come see me during your free time. I am available before and after school, as well as 2nd, 3rd, and 5th periods. I grade on a total point system. Assignments may be checked/collected for completion and/or accuracy. There will be a weekly quiz and possible random homework checks. Assignments/assessments will be in the form of homework, articles, online discussions, quizzes and exams.

Grades are determined as follows:

A+ / [99, ∞) / B- / [80, 82) / D / [62, 68)
A / [92, 99) / C+ / [78, 80) / D- / [60, 62)
A- / [90, 92) / C / [72, 78) / F / (-, 60)
B+ / [88, 90) / C- / [70, 72) / F- / Grade < -
B / [82, 88) / D+ / [68, 70)

Please keep in mind that the AP Calculus BC exam is on May 9, 2017. (Registration materials to come later.)

I look forward to an amazing school year full of learning, growth, and an increased appreciation for mathematics.

Remember, as I once learned from my teacher years ago, “Calculus is fun!”
