Mr. Ken James, Principal started the meeting.

Introduction

Ken introduced Randy Lazar from Tempe Union School District who was viewing how the Site Council meeting is run.

AMS

A team of students from the Accelerated Middle School competed at the Honeywell Fiesta Bowl Aerospace Challenge Saturday at the Challenger Space Center in Peoria.

The competition involved students building a replica space station for the moon that would serve as a resort to visitors. Some 200 junior highs and middle schools competed, with the final six advancing to Saturday's finals. The final day included interviews and screening by a judging team of three astronauts and 10 Honeywell staff.

Basha High School’s AMS won this competition and as part of their win the students and their teacher Amanda Cook earned a trip to NASA in Houston.

School Assembly

This Friday, March 1st we will have our last school wide assembly. This assembly will not only recognize the students playing in spring sports but we will also be recognizing the Valedictorian and the Salututorian. Along with the top 5 seniors, a State Champion Wrestler and the Cheer Co-Ed team winning state.

BIN

Ken asked if anyone knew what BIN meant. Means Basha in Nicaragua, similar to the Africa/Basha project from a few years ago also worked on by STUGO. At this time they have only raised between $8 and $10,000 and they will need to raise $35,000. Hopefully this semester we will see more promoting of this project. Ken also mentioned that this project may be carried over a two year period, so they are able to collect all the funds necessary.

Lockdown

We are expecting to have a practice lockdown within the next week and it looks like this lockdown will happen during passing periods. Specific directions will be made to teachers to ensure students are ushered into the nearest classroom.

Also, another safety issue that is being addressed is to keep the upstairs “C” and “F” outside doors locked. After speaking to security by keeping them locked this would force people to walk through the downstairs where they would be going thru a camera. It might deter students from doing something inappropriate, since there are no cameras in the upstairs hallways in either building.

Testing

Mr. James informed everyone that AIMS testing was going on this week on Monday and Tuesday. The second AIMS testing would be taking place on April 9th and 10th. Stanford testing will be on April 18th and 19th. ACT for all juniors will be on Tuesday, April 23rd. AP Testing will take place in May.

Calendars

Mrs. Angela Addis, the parent serving on the District Calendar Committee shared with everyone the several options for calendars beginning 2014/2015 thru 2018/2019. Any input can be shared with either Sandra who will relate to Mrs. Addis to take back or Mrs. Addis also offered her contact information.

Senior Project

Mr. James shared with everyone the various ideas students have come up for senior projects. He stated that many of the projects being brought forth are from students that are working on different ideas to help others. Such as cancer organizations, the homeless, stopping and/or making others aware of bullying. The senior showcase is Monday, April 8th, if parents would like to attend.
