VOLLEYBALL 2009

Mr. Bett / Mrs. Propis / Mr. Buckenmeyer

*Volleyball was invented in the U.S.A.

~OBJECT~

The object of the game is to hit the ball over the net in such a manner that the opposing team is unable to return it within 3 contacts.

~TEAMS~

In a regulation game, each team consists of 6 players. These positions rotate in a clockwise direction by the serving team with each change of service.

In class teams will consist of 4 players per side, with teams of 5 depending on class size.

~SERVICE~

Overhand serving is encouraged. Rally scoring will be used and every rally is equal to a point.

~GAME~

In a regulation game the winner is the first team to score 21, 25, or 30 points with a 2 pt. advantage over the opponent. Games in class are timed!

~RULES~

1.)Only 3 hits per side.

2.)The ball may hit any part of the body cleanly and is counted as 1 hit.

3.)The ball must go over the net on the serve! It’s a legal serve if the ball hits the net and goes over.

4.)Players may not contact the net during play.

5.)Backline players may spike the ball from behind the 10’ line only.

6.) In the competitive division, the server must serve behind the end line and in the beginner level the server may take a couple steps into the court.(if needed)

7.)Scooping, lifting, pushing, or throwing the ball constitutes carrying or holding which is a ball-handling fault.

~SKILLS~

1.) ForearmPass(bump)-used when the ball falls below shoulder height. (Usually used on serve receive or on the first contact over the net)

2.) Set- used as the second hit when the ball is above shoulder height. The contact should be soft, high, and fairly close to the net so the third hit can be spiked over the net.

3.)Spike or Attack Hit-should be the third hit and the ball is contacted at the height of one’s reach and driven down into the opponents’ court.

4.) Serve- should be an overhand contact of the ball after being tossed in the air by the other hand.

Underhand may be used only in the beginner division and only after unsuccessful attempts at an overhand serve.

5.) Blocking- should be used to prevent the ball from landing on the blockers side, jumping straight up with hands and arms extended opposite the attacker.

*Techniques will be demonstrated and reviewed in class! *

~ROTATIONS~

1.) Clockwise rotation will be used in class.

~SAFETY~

*PLEASE roll the ball under the net when returning it to your opponent! *

*Play your own position.

*Do not kick the ball.

*Talk to each other! Call out when you have the ball so collisions do not occur!
