JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Graduate Research Assistant

REPORTS TO:Anjali Deshpande

General Summary: This position is a quarter-time position emphasizing work experience that is particularly relevant to students completing the Master of Public Health degree and who have a future interest in working in a governmental public health agency. Work will typically include carrying out a range of descriptiveand analytical activities related to the surveillance, detection, and prevention of diseases and injuries at state and local health departments. The ideal candidate will have completed introductory coursework in epidemiology and biostatistics and will have an interest in working with public health professionals at the state and local levels to develop, implement, and evaluate the use of public health data in evidence-based decision-making.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Position may involve any or all of the following:

  • Identify disease surveillance needs, generate surveillance reports, and support evaluation of public health surveillance systems
  • Collect and analyze data related to program implementation and evaluation
  • Conduct literature reviews on a variety of health topics
  • Design, conduct and analyze data using a variety of methods including surveys and interviews
  • Create and manage databases, including the retrieval of data from databases for analysis or data review
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a data training workshop (to be held on April 9, 2018 as a preconference workshop prior to the Governor’s Conference on Public Health)
  • Perform administrative functions such as monitoring work deliverables and providing communication support between the University of Iowa CPH and the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH)
  • Organize and present data clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, through a variety of data visualization methods
  • Other duties as assigned

Location: The position formally exists within the MPH program at UI College of Public Health. The position is physically located in the Iowa Institute of Public Health Research and Policy (IIPHRP) at CPH but may require occasional travel to Des Moines/surrounding area for project meetings/trainings, etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge:Routine epidemiologic functions related to public health surveillance, data collection, and qualitative and quantitative data analysis; general knowledge of governmental public health organizations

Skills:Proficient with computer applications; experience with data management and analysis; excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills; excellent organizational skills

Abilities:Must be able to work and problem-solve independently and efficiently; possess excellent analytic and interpersonal skills; ability to work with a team of professionals

Other:

Position is 15hours per week, during the spring semester.

Requirement: Candidates MUST be enrolled in the University of Iowa MPH program, and seeking graduate assistantships.
