Assignment: Create a photo story of your novel which includes a summary of pictures, words and music.

Requirements

  1. Opening of photo story
  • Creative opening (hooks me in)
  • Title and author
  1. Include at least 20 photos/clip art
  • Photos/clip art should represent significant ideas/events/themes from the book
  • Photos/clip art should be used to support the elements of fiction.
  • Photos/clip art should connect to a previous or former word slide.
  1. Retelling of book
  • Should include elements of fiction

exposition, conflict, rising action (at least 3 events), climax, falling action, & resolution

should be written in short sentences or phrases (2 maximum per slide)

  • Length per slide – should allow for viewer to be able to read what is written on word slides

  • Font should be easy to read (bold, no script font)
  • Your name and class period should be put in at the end of the photo story as credits.

Directions for Creating a Movie

1. Decide how many frames/slides you will use.

2. Map out your presentation using a Movie Story Outline.

  • Complete organizer
  • Complete story board map
  • Must be completed before you begin Power Point presentation

3. Create all frames/slides in Power Point

4. Once you have created all slides you must save them as a JPEG file.

  • Click “save as”
  • Under “save as type,” find JPEG File Interchange Format
  • Click OK
  • It will ask you if you want to export every slide in the presentation – click “Every slide”

5. Once all of your slides have been created, you are ready to put your presentation into Movie Maker.

Begin Movie Maker

  • Start, All Programs, Windows Movie Maker

To Import Pictures into Movie Maker:

  • Click Tasks
  • Click Capture Video, Import pictures
  • Find the location of your files in your H drive. To import all pictures at once, click the first picture and hold down Shift key, then click last picture.
  • Click Import
  • Drag and drop pictures into Storyboard/Timeline. To capture all pictures, click the first picture and hold down Shift key, then click last picture.

Change Duration of Individual Slide

  • Click View, then, click Timeline.
  • Select the slide whose duration you want to change.
  • To extend the playback duration of a slide, drag the end trim handle toward the end of the timeline. To reduce the playback duration of a slide, drag the end trim handle toward the beginning of the timeline.

Tip: Trim handles appear as black triangles at the beginning and end of a clip. The pointer changes to a red double-headed arrow when you hold it over a trim handle.

Change Duration of Every Slide:

  • First, you must delete pictures from storyboard.
  • Then, click Tools, Options, Advanced, Picture Duration.
  • Change duration.
  • Now, re-import all pictures.

Adding Transitions:

  • Click Tasks
  • Click Edit Movie, View Video Transitions
  • Click on a transition then Play under the monitor to see a preview of what transition looks like.
  • Drag transition to the timeline and drop it between two clips on the video track OR, if you are in the storyboard view, you can drag the transition to the transition cell between two pictures.

Tip: Each transition adds 1.25 seconds. You can change the duration of all transitions. First, delete pictures from storyboard. Click Tools, Options, Advanced, Picture Duration. Change duration. Now, re-import all pictures.

Adding Music:

  • Click Tasks
  • Click Capture Video, Import Audio or Music
  • Find music in S drive
  • S:\Team Folders\Music\Music2
  • S:\Team Folders\Library\Royalty Free Music
  • Select song and Click Import
  • Drag and drop music where you want music to start.

Tip: If your song is shorter than your movie, you can add the same song.

Tip: Movie Maker accepts the following file extensions: wma (Windows Media Audio) and mp3.

Change Music Start/End Point:

  • Click the music.
  • Drag the playback indicator on the storyboard to the point in the music where you want it to start or stop playing in your movie.

Change Audio Volume:

  • Under Tools, Audio Levels. Move the slider left to lower the volume or right to increase it.

Saving Your Project (Do this often!):

  • Click File, Save Project as
  • Go to H drive, Reading Folder
  • Name File: Your Last Name Movie Maker

Credits Slide:

Include the following:

  • Your name as creator and period #.
  • Your book: Author Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. City: Publisher, Year. Print.
  • Music: include artist's name and the name of song:
  • Format: Artist Last name, First Name (if given). “Title of Song.”
  • Example: King, Ben E. "I Who Have Nothing."
  • Source for images

Final Save:

  • Click Finish Movie, Save to my computer
  • Name file: Your last name
  • Click Browse and save to Reading Folder in H drive
  • Click next, next, finish
  • Open Reading Folder and restore down. Open S drive, Hand in Folder, Fusion, Porter, and your period # and restore down. Drag and drop file from your Reading folder into your Period folder.

Tip: If a screen for Windows Media Player opens, click recommended settings.

Options for Music

Option 1 - Convert Your iTunes Songs to MP3s

1. In iTunes, go to Edit, Preferences, General.

2. Click the Import Settings button.

3. Change the Import Using option to MP3 Encoder.

4. In the Setting field, choose Custom, and then set Stereo Bit Rate to your desired setting (I recommend 256 kbps or 320 kbps).

5. Click OK three times to exit the various windows.

Now you're all set to convert any iTunes Plus download to the MP3 format. To do that, right-click the song and choose Create MP3 Version. Wait a minute or so and presto: iTunes plops an MP3 copy of the song into your library.

Option 2 – Converting Songs to MP3s

  1. Find the song you want to use on You Tube. Copy the link.
  2. Go to the following website:
  3. Paste the link to convert the file
  4. Hit Download (you will be asked to do this two times)
  5. It will now be in your download folder on your computer. Save the download to a flash drive.
  6. When you access the file from your flash drive at school, be sure to click “Download I-tunes” to access the file.
  7. Save to your photo story

Questions to ask yourself before Finalizing project

1. Do I have a title slide?

2. Is my slide show 3 – 3 1/2 minutes in length?

3. Do I have a theme slide?

4. Have I previewed my slideshow to make sure I can read all slides? Does it move at the right pace?

5. Have I checked for spelling, punctuation, or grammatical errors?

6. Do I have a credit slide, including name and period #

To Finalize for Grading

1. In the last window of photo story, type your name in the browse window.

Ex. Porter Browse

2. Press Browse when you have finished typing in your name. Save to your H-drive or a flash drive.

3. Press Next at the bottom of the page. This will save your project in your H-drive or flash drive

4. Open S-drive

  • Click on Hand in folder
  • Fusion
  • Porter (per. # class you are in)

5. Open up H-drive or flash drive folder and at the same time open up the S-drive as stated in Step #4. The two folders should be side by side on your screen.

6. Click and drag your photo story from your H-drive or flash drive into the S-drive folder as stated in Step #4. Double click on video to make sure that it is working properly.
