Motion 2: Let it Pee part 1

Proposer: Stacey Johnson-Roberts

Speech For: Stacey Johnson-Roberts

Speech Against: Open

Summation: Open

This Union Notes (Facts)

1.  The Equality Act 2010

2.  The Sex Discrimination Act 1975

3.  Newman University has a hidden population of trans-students, including those who will identify as trans and those who identify as non-binary.

4.  Some students, including Trans students, would prefer to use gender neutral students, however as these don’t exist in most of the campus and the ones that do exist (in the library) are not labelled as such

5.  The NUS LGBT+ Campaign has a policy to provide gender neutral toilets at NUS events and to campaign for gender-neutral toilet in all educational institutions and student unions

This Union Believes (What we believe in)

1.  Many students would benefit greatly from the existence of gender-neutral toilets

2.  That gender-neutral toilets can also be used by cis-gender students (non-trans)

3.  Moving towards making gender-neutral toilets has been done by many universities and unions including Catholic group Universities such as Queen Mary University of London

4.  Having gender neutral toilets at Newman would mean that the University could host Union NUS national events

This Union Resolves (What we want to do to fix it)

1.  To support students in their right to use toilets in line with their gender identity

2.  To lobby the University to provide facilities that are required by Trans students and clearly signpost them

3.  To publicize the existence of these provisions, their locations and the reasons for them at the beginning of each year to students

4.  To lobby the University to make all current single cubicle toilets gender-neutral

5.  To lobby the University to ensure that specific gender-neutral toilets will be built in every new building made from this day forth

6.  To make feminine hygiene services available in these facilities in a similar manner to female toilets. This is for trans students with particular needs associated with the female sex and female students who choose to use them.
