Cook a simple outdoor meal.

This is a very simple requirement the scout youth can earn. The incentive that comes into play with this requirement is that the youth can eat the meal they produce and they can choose to eat the meal half cooked or burnt.

Our Troop implements one simple rule to earn this requirement. This is as follows:

A meal must be setup as follows:

1.  Safe preparation / layout of the cooking area

2.  Safe cooking techniques

3.  Awareness of boiling water, utensils and burning equipment

4.  Clean up of cooking area

5.  Correct Disposal of grey water or waste materials

The above rule also covers the following skills

1.  Youth must learn how to safely use a 2 burner Coleman stove (we use these at our Standing camps)

·  If the youth does not have their stove/lantern permit, they must be supervised when doing the cooking.

2.  Youth must know how to setup a campfire on which they can cook

·  This can be a campfire with glowing coals

·  This can be a campfire with a grill placed over the fire for cooking via grilling.

3.  Youth must cook a meal of their choice on the following:

·  Coleman stove

·  Open campfire

4.  Hygiene

·  related to food

·  related to personal cleanliness

5.  Safe campsite layout

6.  Safe use of knives

FOOD

The following meals DO NOT COUNT as they do not provide adequate learning experience.

·  Cooking marshmallows

·  Cooking smores

·  Cooking a hotdog on a stick

PROGRAM ACTIVITIES associated with this requirement

·  Demonstrate safe use of a stove

·  Construction of a campfire and safe ignition of a campfire

·  LNT campfire

·  Weekend camping activities

·  One day 6 hour outdoor activities

·  Weekly Program meetings at your local fire pit.
