Prayer Book

Dear parents,

Greetings from the Faith Formation Department,

Prayer is an essential activity of every member of the Body of Christ, both the personal, private prayer of the individual and the public, communal prayer of the gathered faithful. It is through the act of praying that one enters into conscious, loving communion with God.

The power of prayer is affirmed throughout Scripture. The catechism of Catholic Church defines prayer as one of the pillars of our faith. Great saints have offered definitions of prayer throughout the ages- raising the mind to God (John Damascene), conversation and discussion with God (Gregory of Nyssa), affectionate directing of the mind to God (Augustine), intimate sharing between friends (Teresa of Avila), and loving attentiveness to God (John of the Cross).

Through living tradition, the Holy Spirit in the Church teaches the children of God to pray. As intimately personal as it is, prayer makes use of word formulas. Liturgical prayer – the official community prayer of the Church – uses approved formulas. So does unofficial group prayer. Private prayer, at its most personal is spontaneous and impromptu- and sometimes even wordless, however, even in solitary private prayer, traditional formulas can be of great help. Formulas are practical helps for breaking into prayer and expressing faith.

For this reason, we have instituted a prayer awards program in our CCE curriculum. Our goal is to help each child establish a pattern of prayer in their daily lives. We have compiled a listing of prayers, scriptures, and catholic teachings that we would like for you to help your child learn this year. These are time honored formulas of Catholic devotion that express a whole range of prayerful attitudes.

Each grade level is assigned particular prayers to learn. It is a progressive program building on the prayers learned in the previous years. Progress is recorded throughout the year on the prayer charts in St Basil’s Hallway. Those who achieve learning these prayers will be rewarded with a special treat at the end of the year. The offer of awards and special treats are for incentive purposes only. So please take the time to help your child learn his/her prayers. Maybe, this will be a great opportunity to renew your own prayer life or the prayer life of your family. We are here to help you bring your child up in the faith.

May God Bless You Always

Four Marks of the Church

The Church is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic.

One- - because it is united into one body in Christ Jesus by baptism.

Holy- because it is called to follow Christ's holiness who claimed the church as his bride

Catholic - because it is open to everyone everywhere who wants to follow Jesus.

Apostolic- because it is rooted in the witness of the Apostles

Scripture Verse: Psalm 23 (memorize)

Jesus said, “I am the bread of life; whoever come to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father. Through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven by the power of the Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, died, and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
