Our monthly meeting with a talk by Gareth Harrison who has been a member of the bat group since he was 7 years old!
He will be presenting the findings of his dissertation study, carried out in the summer 2012, into bat and insect activity over canals, ponds and lakes/reservoirs in the Wigan area, taking into account nitrate and phosphorus concentrations of the water at each site. The study aimed to provide insight into the relationship between water quality, insect abundance and bat abundance at different sites. It attempted to provide explanations for higher bat abundance recorded at some sites as opposed to others, in terms of surrounding habitat, water quality and insect abundance.

South Lancashire Bat Group is covered under a Public Liability Insurance policy, but no Personal Liability is covered. Anyone taking part in bat group events, including bat box checks, bat walks and hibernation site checks, does so at their own risk. South Lancashire Bat Group recommends the wearing of gloves and an up to date rabies vaccination when handling bats, which should be carried out in accordance with the current guidance from the Bat Conservation Trust.

Throughout the winter, various Hibernation surveys will be arranged, however these are by invite only.

Also training workshops are available to members. Due to previous issues over these events they are not directly advertised, as they are intended for group members to expand their knowledge and provide better understanding of bats and increase skills to benefit bat conservation through the bat group. The workshops are not for consultants.
